Andy Taylor began as a goofy country bumpkin.
Then, as the show hit its prime, he became the wise, kind-hearted father figure in Mayberry.
Then in later seasons (after Barney left), he became the town grouch, always exasperated at the antics of those around him.

Any character on a successful show that lasts for 5+ seasons honesty. Everyone eventually becomes caricatures of themselves.
Yea, aside from becoming caricatures people need to realize that on these long running shows, the writing staff is going to change over the years

Plus it’s just a fact that dumb guys, esp dumb fat guys, provide easy humor. Is there any sitcom without an outlandishly dumb person for cheap laughs?

Roger, from American Dad, went from a shut in alien who barely escaped Area 51 to a cross species dressing creature who played a crucial part in an insane amounts of American and World history.

Came to mention Andy.
1st season Andy was terrible. But he wasn’t loveable at all.
