Being there will be no Rust or Marty or relatable south Louisiana themes in season 2, it also has the potential to be another American Horror Story.
The problem is the Wire and TD are really too different to be compared. The Wire is at bottom social critique. It advances from season to season by analyzing another feature of a corrupted system.
True Detective was a much more philosophical show, and it disclosed a complete philosophical vision by the end of the show. It's going to be interesting to see how the next season can link to the first and still add something new. I'm not sure it can be done.
On the other hand, it doesn't matter because TD is a complete story within one season. The first season can't be judged by the failure of later seasons.

I tried to watch both but the first episode of each did nothing for me and I stopped watching. Someone tell me how far I have to get into the shows to get "hooked" please.
Didn't you come here awhile back saying you couldn't get into it after only watching 15 minutes of the first episode of The Wire?

You jumped to turrible conclusions.

True Detective was entertaining but, in my opinion, not one of the all time greats. What made me want to watch TD were the lead actors involved. If two nobodies had been cast as the main detectives, no one would be bragging about how good the story was. Honestly, the story was dull.
Conversely, hardly anyone knew any of the actors who starred in The Wire. Yet, it held my attention for the entire time it was on HBO.

Okay! I fricking love The Wire but have my misgivings. I really love TD and hope to see it match or surpass its 1st season. Wat?
