Don't know if the perps themselves are tied together in some way, but S1 is, absolutley.
Watch season 1 when Marty is talking to his former colleague about getting files and says he has been working on a project called "True Crime" and think to when in this season they are filming the documentary and look at what the take reel says. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are in the credits as executive producers, they will make an appearance.

They were executive producers on season 2 as well...

Why didn't she write a sequel?
Because she knows her husband murdered a connected former cop and they need to back off or Hoyt will have him prosecuted.

When Purple is laying out the phone calls and flight records (did anyone notice he used Rolands badge number to request?) he says to him something to the effect of “we can do right by Tom” and Roland responds “I ain’t that simple”.
Sort of confirms some deeper connections that were foreshadowed earlier.
Seriously??
As another poster said he’s saying I’m not stupid I heard you the first time.
If anything indicates some sort of connection it was the early scene in 90 when Roland goes to Toms house and is telling him how proud of him he is.
Tom then asks him to pray and they are holding hands for a long time and Roland looks over at him with some kind of look.
I didn’t think much of it at the time because I don’t care if they had some sort of relationship or not. I think it would be irrelevant to the story and the mystery that is being unraveled.
But if I was inclined to look for those signs, I’d probably go back to that scene and watch it closer to see what Tom was saying and what that look may have been about.

I got distracted. I didn’t feel compelled to keep watching. I don’t need shoot’em ups or car crashes. I do enjoy intrigue and interesting characters, though.
