Roland responds “I ain’t that simple”.
Sort of confirms some deeper connections that were foreshadowed earlier.

In the season finale preview it shows Hays on a college campus likely where he dropped off his daughter. Im curious to see if there are Hoyt connections with both his daughter and wife.
When they were shooting, the scene was set as Wayne dropping off Rebecca at a college in St. Louis. They didn't make that clear in the scene as shown in the episode, just that she was "going away to college".
In the preview scene for E8, that's very obviously the campus of Arkansas. Perhaps Amelia becomes a literature professor at the U of A (where Nic Pizzolato taught while getting his MFA) or some other storyline.
It's hard to say, because they've been pretty vague about a lot of things related to Rebecca and Amelia in the modern timeline.

So this was a throwaway line but pretty much told us Roland was gay, which is not the point. The line confirming he is gay just adds gravity to the interrogation scene last episode.
Roland West isn't a frickin cock sucker.

I don’t think he is either. I think he just had a soft spot for poor old Tom.

Could Hoyt be the Yellow King?
eta: Nevermind. Writer shot that down on Reddit.

He also confirmed Becca isn't dead and she is really in California. Can't believe he's addressing all of these theories directly.

That has to be one of the GOAT True Detective episodes of all time. This season is approaching S1 territory.

Are they trying to tie this in with season 1 and the missing kids ?
They mentioned the missing kids in La with politicians involved.

Anyone else think Julie might be living in the hoyt compound in 2015 as Isabelle’s replacement daughter again? She is still missing in 2015 and mr june is looking for her in 1990 probably after whatever goes down then. Roland and hayes finally finding her in 2015 would be pretty epic for an ending.

In the finale preview it shows them walking down the basement hallway and it appears the hoyt mansion (or at least that section) is abandoned

When Purple is laying out the phone calls and flight records (did anyone notice he used Rolands badge number to request?) he says to him something to the effect of “we can do right by Tom” and Roland responds “I ain’t that simple”.

No. Hayes was basically just saying the same thing over and over about Tom.
Roland meant it like he understood him the first time and Wayne doesn't need to repeat himself. Basically replace the word simple with stupid.

I don't think Amelia gets talked about enough. But then again, I'm not sure what to say, except that I think she plays into this somehow. There's so much mystery to her, but I find myself forgetting to question about her.
Where did she come from? We get teased in that nice dinner scene that she's "somewhat of a mess" but what does that mean? And we've been given no clues add to how she died or what happened to Becca. Why didn't she write a sequel? Hays just says something throwaway like "oh well she just gave up on that." That can't be it.
I kind of want to go back and watch all scenes with her just to see if there's some clue I missed. Especially the scenes where she's reading a book/poem and the scene where she appears to Wayne in 2015.

The Reddit theories during S1 were so awesome to read. Great free entertainment.
