shitty musicians like Allen Toussaint, Galactic and Trombone Shorty. If only they'd just use Kings of Leon or Carrie Underwood they'd have a good sound track. lulz

i'm glad you see my point. The only time i listen to "New Orleans-esque" type music is Mardi Gras time. I like Jazz, but New Orleans jazz isn't my type of thing. The 1st episode the music wasn't too bad. But this episode was too much music. I want to watch a tv show, not a concert. A little is fine, but i feel they are focusing too hard on the music, that it's actually taking away from the show.

One of the running storylines is the "cover up" of the black inmate being "lost".

Don't really think its a cover-up at this time. More of a cluster frick which I feel is pretty believable. The sister is obviously frustrated, but doesn't appear that it is racially motivated. Hell several white cops/personnel have tried to help find the brother

That ain't it, Bug. It's just that idiot children sometimes are annoying even though you have sympathy for them. You are a case in point.

ETA: The "lost" inmate story is actually taken from real life and, in fact, happened more than once.

Simon and Overmyer set out to do a show about New Orleans musicians for the most part. I suggest you're going to have a tough time with the series.

Bug don't you think; music food culture crime are interwoven in NOLA? It seems cloying because an "Outsider" has noticed these things and represented them...I am likng this show remember ther's always a kernal of truth to a stereotype....

I do, but i think that last nights episode was too much music playing. I understand music is a big part of NOLA. But as for as a television series is going, if you have 30 minutes of music playing in a 1 hour show, it's gonna start losing viewers. For the most part, i believe people watch tv shows for the story lines.

Of course. I liked the first episode, but the second episode was too much music for my taste. I'd rather see more storyline development. It is the 2nd show however, and being that it is about an area many of us on this board are familiar with, i think we are all a little hyper-critical.

That's the point. The show is ABOUT musicians in Treme' and post Katrina N.O. It is ABOUT the indigenous food, music and culture. If someone doesn't find those things ineresting, they're not going to like the show. That's fine, but why are they watching at all? It is literally like me watching a Yankees-Red Sox game and complaining because I don't like baseball.

ETA: And to point to the elephant in the room, it's odd that people think the "bad cop" thing is overplayed in light of the Danziger Bridge shootings, police beatings on Bourbon St., and the "blockade" on the GNO Bridge.

again, i understand that. But the obvious ad placement was annoying. They zoomed in on the louisiana hot sauce bottle, they zoomed in on the community coffee cups.
Supporting the local establishments are all fine and good, but it comes off as tacky to do it in an obvious way as they did last night.

And by the way, I actually do agree they could have cut a little of the music in Episode 2.

which doesn't mean 1/3 of each episode has to show music being played

your vision of this show is just how i'd picture the nola-lover to picture it

you want a TLC special about everything that you can spin into a positive about nola

you want a documentary, when this is supposed to be a fictional series. you can't make a fictional series about music, as music is an identifiable, non-living thing. you can create a fiction about the people who made/play the music, but music itself is stale

quote:

It is literally like me watching a Yankees-Red Sox game and complaining because I don't like baseball.

a baseball game is a real event

your example is horrible

if you were watching a movie about somebody going to watch a baseball game, then you'd have an example

SFP, you are completely wrong about the "positive spin". In fact, a friend and I were saying just this morning that the show needs to show more "warts" in New Orleans. It's coming. It will get darker for some storylines.

No. I do not want a documentary. I understand the difference between documentary and narrative film quite well and will be happy to explain it to you sometime.

The baseball analogy is, in fact, quite apt. I will explain that to you as well some other time.

no, it's not

a baseball game is a real event that is happening in live time

fever pitch is the correct comparison. a movie with a fictional story with baseball in the background

same as treme...a show with a fictional story with nola in the background
