Trekkies: Why didn't Star fleet use a cloaking device for their ships?

I was just thinking, Klingons used the hell out of it from what little I know of the ST universe. Why not drop it on some Star fleet ships? If they did I never saw it used to much extent in tv or movie.

Illegal.

Plus, they experimented with it in TNG with disastrous results.

That is a huge advantage to let go of. What disastrous results? Why could the Klingons pull it off but not the Federation?

Klingons DGAF.

Supposedly , it's a safety/power usage thing. Also, its not a "good guy" thing to have. Some of the novels say that some Federation warships do indeed have cloaking technology, though.

They had a treaty with the Klingons and the Romulans not to develop that tech in order to maintain peace.

Cloaking devices were made illegal for use by the federation when they signed the peace treaty with the Klingon Empire. I believe the Klingon stole the tech from the Romulans anyways.

It was a concession to the Romulans in a treaty.

Federation is prohibited from acquiring or developing them.

I used to believe my car had a cloaking device when I was driving home from the clubs. Always worked for me too.

It's actually a whole class of ship. New Orleans

Also, the only reason the Pegasus cloak was dangerous is because of the phasing ability.

As of "now" the federation has one cloak on loan from the Romulan Star Empire, installed on the Defiant.

That is the dumbest thing I ever heard. Federation must have been negotiating from a position of extreme weakness. Otherwise, that is a terrible compromise.

That did not indicate a position of weakness. Obama must have negotiated that treaty for the Federation.

In what subsequent conflict would a cloak have helped? Cloaks can't be used in battle so they are only useful for getting in position. The Federation has never been for going on the offensive.

The talent and resources needed to develop a cloak was better used for shields, weapons, ect. Like with the Defiant Class.

Spinoff: Does anybody else use torpedos?

This. For the people who don't know, apparently, a cloaked ship cannot fire (aside from the joint Klingon/Romulan/Section 31 prototype in The Undiscovered Country). Nor can a ship utilize its transporter while cloaked. Federation ships are generally the best shielded/armed ships, with one galaxy class ship outgunning 2 or 3 birds of prey. The 160 year absence of the Romulans from the scene allowed them to close that gap somewhat with their D'Deridex cruiser but still, not having cloaks isn't generally a day to day disadvantage for the majority of federation starships.

That Shinzon ship in Nemesis did too, but your point stands.

And I bet a cloaked ship can fire torpedos, since doing so wouldn't drain much power.

Didn't realize we had this many trekkies on the board. BTW, I think the Klingons use torpedoes as well.
