there are some great twists out there, but, yes, the majority suck arse

But really to do the thing from a Plot perspective is a problem, which is what most creators do they. They create a plot to have a twist rather than creating characters within a narrative that DEVELOP a twist on their own. We're all plot focused, partially this is actually at the fault of Abrams, the black box and some of his proteges.
Characters and Overall Narrative arc are often usurped by the plot, which it is important to "craft an interesting plot," rather than tell an interesting story.

Yeah but they didn't lay the groundwork for a twist, the twist just comes out of nowhere as it should be while still making sense

It's so unenjoyable for me because I'm usually incorrectly tuned in to the irrelevant
I swear to god, I figure it out in 10 minutes and then I'm sitting there waiting for the movie to be over and I can't say anything to my wife because she knows I've figured it out
If you turn your brain off, or if the editing and pacing is such that you move along too quickly and forget about a red flag that was just presented to you, it can be good. But m night shamalamadingdong is the worst. Other than unbreakable, I've nailed it 10 minutes into his movies (sixth sense didn't even have the expectation of a twist)

From Dusk Till Dawn - when people all the sudden turned into vampires.
Magnolia - Frogs all the sudden started falling from the sky.

Completely agree. And same with the better half, she HATES when I call films. So I just there knowing...and not saying anything And it gets really bad when I'm watching a movie for the first time and I can say a follow-up line....scary.
Even Ex Machina, and the ONLY scene that got to me, that got me to reconsider the end game, was the razor in the bathroom. Other than that, I called it. Still a great film, but not unexpected.
I think I've just watched too much film at this point. Outside of the abstract stuff like Jodorwosky and Maddin, I just don't get surprised. Maybe that's way all of the plot easiness of modern Blockbusters/Superhero movies just doesn't bother me, most films see pretty simple and predictable, even when they try for surprises.

Didn't see magnolia
The matrix is a good twist
Dusk till dawn is more of a surprising development than a twist but yeah, didn't see that coming
Those two didn't lay groundwork though for the big reveal, they just reveal it to you and move forward while you haven't even had time for the shock of it all to wear off, making the following scenes even more intense and interesting

Ex machina was good though because you're suppose to figure it out and then they frick with you.
Plus it isn't all about the twist so much as deciphering who is lying and about what. The whole thing isn't rising to a crescendo like shamalamadingdong or like a lot of other films
That shite is only supposed to happen in detective movies

Do you even Prestige, bro?

The only time I'm impressed by this is when the movie have you all of the clues to figure it out yourself, and I still didn't get it. But they put all of the information in front of me, and I still missed it.
What's lazy is when they introduce something at the very end that changes everything, and pass it off as a twist. No. That's bullshite.

Murder on the Orient Express. Yes it was a book before, but what a magnificent film as well.

Primal Fear was one of the better ones in the last 20-25 years. I didn't see that coming.

that is a good one. though I was more caught up in the rivalry between the two rather than the twist, the movie wasn't about the twist. when he showed up at the end, I thought, oh he has a twin

wayward pines is the worst...they just gave me the timeline for 3 people related to this place, 2 of them arrived at the same time, and that was it...I had it...frick! because it's a good twist that was ruined.

the theme i'm seeing with the good ones posters are mentioning is that the plot doesn't revolve around figuring out the mystery or deciphering the twist...they're stories that out of thin air, have a big twist that adds to the movie but is not the entire movie.

I can handle a lazy twist.
What I can't abide by is when a movie preview straight up tells you there is a major twist in the movie. (usually its the ending they pimp but not always)
There is nothing more frustrating that seeing a flick already knowing that the bulk of what you see is going to be flipped on its head.
The most recent one I can think of was Oblivion. Showing us Morgan Freeman as he says something along the lines of "Everything you know is a lie" in the ads was horseshite b/c the mother fricker takes like 45 minutes to even show up in the movie. So for the first chunk I'm just sitting there waiting for him to tell me why all the world building they are doing is a lie.

I agree that most movies and tv shows are very lazy when they try to setup/solve mysteries. Shym-a-sham is particularly bad about this.
I rewatched a couple of twilight zone eps last night and they had more suspense and twists in 20 mins than a lot of current content.
"Usual Suspects" was a good "recent" movie where we as the audience had all the information.
The books "ten little indians" by agatha christie, and "and instance of the fingerpost" by Ian Pears are two solid mystery books I recommend.
