So do stand-ins.

(I'm trolling y'all a little - I enjoyed his work in King Kong and LOTR - but what he does strains the line between acting and animation. I'm not really interested in the new POTA film series, but I had the same discussion with a co-worker the other day - essentially a voiceover performance getting all this praise. Same issue with Avatar.)

Would you feel differently if he were on screen in an ape suit?

The movie was solid

But if he didn't win it for Gollum in Two Towers he shouldn't win it for Caesar

Everyone's got an opinion but it's beyond solid IMO

It's a different time. The Two Towers was 10 years ago. Motion capture was in it's early stages.

I've never seen a person on this board fap over a movie like you are over this one not hating just observing

It was top 3 this summer but I thought Edge of Tomorrow and Xmen were way better IMO

Right, if Fassbender can somehow get nominated for Frank, then Serkis should get a nomination for DotPotA.

Heck, Brad Pitt got a nomination and they just put his face on other people's body.

People are still going crazy over Xmen. This movie is on par with it. Edge of Tomorrow is good, but overrated IMO.

I'm admittedly smitten with it. I'm waiting for more people to see it. I can't be alone in my admiration. It's better than any art house oscar bait movie that I've seen an it's better than any blockbuster that's been released in my lifetime (I'm 30)

Tap the brakes, Fox - it's a sequel of a reboot. I'm not saying it can't be good, but my goodness - let some time set in.

I think you do not know how motion capture works.

quote:

In a motion-capture performance, Serkis dons a special suit covered with tiny sensors, so that his movements are captured via camera in a way that can be digitally animated to become Gollum or Kong or Caesar.

Less widely understood is that mini-cameras also capture the tiny movements of the actors' faces, registering movements of the eye and facial muscles that suggest a wide range of emotions. Those motions are preserved, rather than invented, by the animators.

Then you would know it isn't simply a voice over performance.

I think the Academy voters are biased against "non traditional" acting. Robin Williams was nominated for Aladdin but he was already established as a "real" actor. Serkis hasn't done much acting other than mo cap. Maybe its time for the Academy to create a new award for voice acting and motion capture. There's already a seperate award for best animated movie.

No, he wasn't. The Oscars have never nominated a voice-over or motion capture performance.

I thought I clearly indicated I was trolling y'all a bit.

While I still don't think this equals acting - as in a full on live, filmed performance - I admit it is challenging in its own right - maybe it deserves consideration under other categories.

Why don't you think it equals acting? Just curious.
