Denzel might be cool but, he will never be as cool as Yul Brynner.

Thought about SWAYR and didn't like leaving at least one of those films out of my top five.
And John Ford got in with The Searchers. It is arguably the greatest Western ever made. Post Civil War elements. Indian elements. Cowboy elements. The taming of the Old West elements. The Duke. Jeffrey Hunter. Natalie Wood.
My sophomore year at Ole Miss there was an American (Americana) culture class that several of my friends took. They had to watch The Searchers as it was considered a quintessential piece of American culture.
Also, Unforgiven is deserved a high ranking, but it would have been the third Eastwood Western on my list.
Some may argue Shane is the best Western ever made-and it's hard to argue against that.
The Magnificent Seven deserves high marks.
I also wanted to include the entire Man With No Name Trilogy. They all are excellent movies. TGTBTU has the best score and complex story. FAFDM stands on its own. I like FFOD the best: "I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him."
I also included one American revisionist or neo Western (Butch Cassidy), though several others are classics (The Wild Bunch, McCabe & Mrs. Miller). The Man With No Name Trilogy are Spaghetti Westerns in the revisionist category.
Others that make a best-of list: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, High Noon, 3:10 to Yuma (1957), HUD, The Tall T, Giant, Winchester '73, True Grit (I like both), Ride the High Country, Rio Bravo, Stagecoach, Red River, Dances with Wolves, Once Upon a Time in the West...
Also, Lonesome Dove is the best Western miniseries ever made.

Lots of great ones listed (and I agree that the original omission of Unforgiven was surprising).
Honorable mentions:
Hombre
The Three Amigos
Star Wars: A New Hope

There are very few people that are going to think Silverado is a top 5 western.
With all the lists that have Tombstone, Silverado wouldn't be all that much of a stretch.

Lonesome Dove (if it counts. It’s really a miniseries)
Unforgiven
Josey Wales
The Assassination of Jesse James ……. ( it’s borderline a true western but a damn fine movie)
Liberty Valence

It’s mind blowing that Silverado has not been mentioned yet
I mean, I love Silverado, and it might actually make my top 50 or 75 movies of all time list. But even I wouldn't have it as a top five western, or top ten probably.

My PERSONAL top 5 (not saying they are the best)
True Grit (Cohen Brothers) ....and No Country is kind of a western.
Unforgiven
3:10 to Yuma (Bale)
Tombstone, even though Kurt Russell, who I love tends to over act in it a little ("YOU TELL THEM HELL'S COMING WITH ME"...then repeats it...)
Django Unchained. "Hey, little troublemaker."
Look, I'm gen x and old and respect the hell out of Josey Wales and the classics...but they are't in my top 5. These were relevant to me in real time.
Honorable mention: There will be blood. Not in my top 5 only because it is "western adjacent." Like No Country for Old Men.

Forgot about this one. Casey Afflec was a revelation in this one. So may good characters. Probably still doesn't make my personal top 5, but I think it's still underrated.

Where's Pale Rider rank? Or Shane?
Interesting juxtaposition.
Pale Rider could be called the profane Shane.

As much as I loved the older westerns with John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Jimmy Stewart, etc., I have to say there have been some great westerns made in the last 30 or so years.
Unforgiven is a damn near perfect movie.
Tombstone is one of the most rewatchable movies ever.
The newer True Grit was better than the John Wayne version and I loved the old one.
The 3:10 to Yuma remake was great.
Dances With Wolves was a great movie that gets crapped on for some reason.
Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight were fun Tarantino entries.
As for modern day westerns, Hell or High Water and No Country for Old Men are top notch.
Probably another topic altogether, but the western genre seems to be the one genre where remakes don’t suck.

My favorites have been named. But surprised this one hasn't been mentioned. Not top five but so entertaining

It would take me a while to come up with my list, but this is a fricking great one. Once Upon a Time in the West, True Grit, the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, High Noon, Unforgiven, Tombstone can be added in there too.
