I think all that is good comedic performance, it isn't what people would consider stand up.

More performance art, which is what he is generally considered.

Kevin Hart broke all of Eddie Murphy's records. His last 3 specials had theatrical releases and broke box office records.

And his delivery is among the most clean and precise, as has ever existed.

Is he oversaturated in movies and commercials? Yes.

As far as Lopez is concerned, yeah the show was shite, but he OWNED the Latino comedy scene from the late 80's to the 2000's

You can hate his politics, which derailed his career, but he is one of the best to ever do it.

Mitch Hedberg has a handful of funny bits, sure. But at the time of his death, was little more than a talk show comedian. He is a huge beneficiary of YouTube. Demitri Martin does basically the exact same thing, but is smarter, more prolific, and less of a junky.

He could have been good, had he been more concerned with his act, than with heroin.

Bill Hicks was "allegedly" really great. The only real specials we have, are shite. His live recording stuff was hit and miss. The last special he did, he bombed really bad. Even Rogan, who loves Hicks, said it was shite.

Most people who talk about how great Hicks was, say we will never know. . .because his best shows came at a time when people were not recording everything. He has a handful of good bits you can pry out of recordings, but that's about it.

Most people under 55 who cite him as one of the greatest are people who think it makes them sound cool (like when "Boondock Saints" came out, and everyone felt they had to call it great or be shunned), or are parroting what old school comedians tell them.

In the late 90s people were ranking him as one of the best, because he died (about the same time people were calling River Phoenix, Cobain and 2Pac the greatest for the same reason). As time has passed, he has steadily dropped.

Hicks would be a solid top-25 guy, maybe up into the top-10 had cancer not taken him.

Rodney Dangerfield
George Carlin
Steve Martin
Eddie Murphy
Dave Atell

The first four were groundbreaking and trend setting. Attel is simply the funniest (according to fellow comedians too). Maybe Bill Burr instead of him.
