Russell Crowe should have won for A Beautiful Mind rather than Gladiator. IIRC he and Denzel were both up those years. Crowe won and then following year Denzel won. I think Denzel was up for Remember the Titans when he lost.

Hot take: Dustin Hoffman should have won for Rain Man, but it should have been for Supporting Actor.

Tom Cruise was the lead in that movie.

very good list...Denzel played the hell out of that role in training day though. completely out of his normal character and he nailed it. easily should have got one for Malcom..

No, he wasn't even the best actor in those two movies.
Brando was better & De Niro was better.

Nah. He was great in Crazy Heart and I don’t really get Oscar vibes from him in The Big Lebowski (although it’s a great movie).

Marlon Brando was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his turn in The Godfather; Al Pacino was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. So they weren't competing against each other that year. Pacino was competing against fellow co-stars James Caan and Robert Duvall, though Joel Grey took home the Oscar for his turn in Cabaret.

The same thing goes for Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II. Pacino was competing for Best Actor in a Leading Role (losing to Art Carney for Harry and Tonto) while Robert De Niro won in the Supporting Actor category.

Jeremy Irons - Reversal of Fortune (1990)

Should have won for - Dead Ringers (1988)

(The Academy basically admitted that this was a make up for Irons not even being nominated for Dead Ringers. Irons even thanked David Cronenberg in his acceptance speech.)

Denzel most definitely deserved an Oscar for Training Day.

Have they yet admitted that Leo's win for The Rev was basically a lifetime achievement award?

You are misremembering something fierce. Denzel Washington was not nominated for Remember the Titans. Crowe's biggest rival that year was Tom Hanks for his turn in Cast Away - a movie he *should* have won for but didn't. Denzel Washington was solid in Training Day but Russell Crowe most certainly should have won the Oscar for A Beautiful Mind.

I agree with most of it but Jeff Bridges winning for Crazy Heart was absolutely spot on. He was legendary in Lebowski but it wasn't an Oscar type of role, and True Grit wasn't anything special and the movie itself was boring as hell
