By the way, somebody earlier mentioned how Vince Gilligan is a genius for creating this universe, and he most certainly is. But I still think he gets a little too much credit for these 2 shows, especially BCS. Not because he’s not a genius—he is, like I said—but another one of his talents is finding the best people in the business to work with. Just about every person working on this show is at the very top of their particular craft. Let’s focus on the casting for a second. Bryan Cranston as Walter, Giancarlo Esposito as Gus, Jonathan Banks as Mike, Dean Norris as Hank, Aaron Paul as Jesse—Breaking Bad would have been completely different and a lesser show without these specific actors (save your hate for Skylar, I think the actress did her job). And in Better Caul Saul, the actors who played Chuck, Howard, The Kettlemans, Nacho, Pryce, and toms more were absolutely nailed.

But the 2 most important castings in BCS were obviously Rhea Seahorn, a beautiful, classically trained theatre actress who has chops we had no idea she was capable of. And that leads me to the most important casting of all, Bob Odenkirk. Not for Breaking Bad, which stretched his abilities for sure, but was not to far out of his wheelhouse.

But how did they turn a mid 50s comedic actor known more for his writing and acting in sketch comedy shows and bit sitcom parts with not leading man looks into a not only a leading man, but a leading man of one of the most high stakes dramas in tv history? They saw something in him and gave him a shot. I came across this YouTube video that shows how great of an actor he is, doing things, oftentimes so subtle that we only feel/notice it subconsciously.

Anyway, I thought it was a pretty fascinating video on Bob as Jimmy and Saul. It’s like 15 minutes. I’ll post if you want to watch it, but I think you should. Gave me a whole new appreciation for him.

Bob Odenkirk can really act

I rewatched the beginning of the 1st episode for this season - when the movers (presumably at the direction of the feds, and after the end of BB) were clearing out Saul's house/mansion.

So, whatever happens to Kim, it appears she was not living with Saul during the BB era.

Yea plus the house itself was obviously all Jimmy's style. You see how Kim decorated their apartment. She isn't an interior designer or anything but she wouldn't have let Jimmy do that to a place she was living in.

I don't see Kim dropping a deuce on a gold plated toilet.

Yeah the initial fee was fifty grand wasn’t it? Then double each successive time.

$80K as I recall, but that was after 4 years of inflation from where we are in BCS.

I hope they elevate Lyle before the season ends!! People want that!

Another stroke of genius was using Lyle to introduce what was obviously a great LPH radio ad jingle:

Pollos Hermanos, Pollos Hermanos,
Delicious chicken grilled and fried.

Pollos Hermanos, Pollos Hermanos,
It will keep you satisfied.

(Sung to the tune of “La Cucaracha.”)

Lots of great casting but you left out the guy that played Lalo.

What's crazy is I read he developed that entire character himself. They were planning him being more menacing like all Salamancas.

This guy wrote him as a happy, high energy, charismatic person. Made him completely more terrifying.

i think that is even better credit than being that genius. surrounding yourself with people who make you look and perform better is a skill and high quality talent itself.
enabling an environment allowing them to excel is a great skill too.

whether or not he thought of a specific idea isnt the be all end all. its what he was able to build even if boosed by others along the way.

Of course I agree with that. Perhaps I should have phrased it more like “The credit Vince gets, while warranted, has the unfortunate unintended consequence of overshadowing some of the other people who work on the show who are all at the top of their respective crafts and without whose collaborative contributions, the quality of the show would not be nearly as consistently high as it continues to be.”

How bout that?

It’s hard to rank such a killer lineup of actors but Tony Dalton is in that top 3-5 area.

I loved him but I feared him

I told someone who hasn’t watched BCS that I thought Lalo was my favorite character in either show.

Even tho i guess i should of saw it coming because he wasn't in BB. I did not think Lalo would be the first Salamanca off the board.

Hank got 3 of them. He should of kept spme trophies like gus. The twins and tuco he was outgunned. Tuco had a AK and Hank thought he found Jesse lol. Then even with the heads up the cousins were the main muscle. They completely whiped out the guys they thought killed dude with the pony tail and shot Nacho to make i5 look like a drive by. No stealth at all involved

If he didn't feel the need to use the axe Hank is dead in that parking lot.

Jesse got the last one at the Eladio hit. The way Gus introduced Jesse. Getting the backstory to it all has been awesome.

Gus is like an autistic Salamanca. Think back to Victor. I know Mike was shocked.
