Thoughts on Baskin (2014) (slight spoilers)

Basic synopsis is 5 Turkish cops are called as backup in the countryside.
First I will say this might be the most beautifully shot horror movie ever filmed. Now what’s in the screen is not but the composition and the lighting and the framing are all spectacular. I usually don’t think about it that much in movies usually but here it’s just excellent. Some shots look like paintings almost.
This movie is pitch black. There’s movies with more ducked up stuff (I’m looking at you The Saddness) and there’s definitely more nolhistic movies. But this movie does a great job of walking the line of showing you evil without making you feel bad. i.e. it’s a real movie.
I don’t like the very ending. Doesn’t quite make sense to me. Feels like kinda a frick yountonthe audience
I do feel like there’s some stuff lost in translation. Like these guys are the worst trained cops of all time to the point I wonder if they’re done sort of adjunct police rather than traditional police. Supposedly there’s a good YouTube video that goes into a lot of the cultural intricacies of the movie that most of us on here won’t appreciate.
This movie is often compared to the Void. I easily see why, but for some reason the void felt a bit more grindhouse.

I haven’t seen it in years, but I remember appreciating what they were trying to do, but just sort of hating it in the end. Very little made sense to me IIRC, and it seemed to push into the “gore for gore’s sake” to the point of absurdity.
I still don’t think I’ve watched The Void, which is similar to Baskin. May need to give it a shot one day.

I LOVE this movie. I strongly recommend watching this 5 1/2 min YouTube video that provides a brief explanation of the main themes and story that a lot of the Western audience probably didn't understand (myself included): Baskin (2016) Horror Movie Explained
I'm sure there are other videos/articles that go more in depth, but this one at least helps you gain a better understanding of the story being told.
Obviously SPOILERS in the video

That was interesting. Makes me like the ending much much much more.
Follow up , what ever happened to modern horror? I know the blog is still active but their podcast network just disappeared

There’s way more going on than just gore for gore’s sake
I hate torture porn movies

I’d rather fight a tiger than go in that house

I know. I'm saying that eventually it just felt like it pushed into that territory, at least for me.
I plan on watching the clip posted above and see if that changes my feelings on it at all, but I remember at some points just wishing the movie was over because it just wasn't very good.

I have somewhat similar feelings. I didn't hate it in the end, but I did feel like it got a little lost.
The novelty of a Turkish horror film was what initial drew me in.

I liked it. It has one of the better "descent into (literal) Hell" portions of any horror movie ever.
I thought it was a bit too artsy fartsy, but I will watch the YT link included in this thread.
