There hasn't been a theatrical movie of consequence released in 2 months

Wanna know why movie theaters are dying a slow, creeping death.

Hoywood has not released a movie worth a shite in 2 months... Not since basically the end of the year, in 1917.

I bet I saw 6 movies in the theater around the holidays with family, friends. I know the studios release all their Oscar films then, but the consumer gets in the habit of going to see decent to good movies for months, then, boom... Nothing. Local movie theaters are still headlining films that came out around Christmas.

I actually want to go see a movie now, but I'm not going to watch a cgi shite fest like Call of the wild.

I don't know how the theaters make it right now. The product their getting from Hollywood is dogshit 8-10 months out of the year. Even the summers are much worse than they used to be.

It's sad when a movie fan is counting down the days until Ben Affleck's alcoholic basketball coach flick hits theaters.

Bad Boys was really good and Invisible Man has been getting great reviews. There was Birds of Prey for the comic fans, though that flopped, and Sonic for the kids. This time of year is typically slow though.

January and February have pretty much always been when the lesser movies were released. This is nothing new.

I place the blame on the audience more than the studios. 14 out of the top 16 movies at the domestic box office last year were franchise films or remakes/reboots. Meanwhile, a superb, original film with a unique premise in Jojo Rabbit finished 104th at the domestic box office. When Hollywood does make great original films, nobody is going to the theaters to watch them. The only original films that do well at the box office nowadays are ones with established well-known directors like Tarantino and Nolan.

This is definitely the truth. If it's not a big budget "event" movie, people aren't that interested. The general public goes to far fewer films per year now. It's why comedies have basically died as a box office force the past few years.

January/February is where studios have long since dumped their trash. Up until very recently, it was rare to see a blockbuster released in those two months.

Jojo Rabbit looked dumb as frick. You can blame movie goers all you want, Hitler's Boys Club isn't going to find an audience.

So you’re upset that January/February aren’t getting the fairy fart Oscar films or the big blockbuster films when they rarely have yet this year saw the first movie released in January gross $200 million domestically and then another one that will cross $150 million domestically in a couple of weeks.

And there is plenty for people to see. Just because you have a stick up your arse about what’s out doesn’t mean others do.

And theaters are doing fine with their memberships. They could give a frick what a movie makes at the box office (especially with Disney being a dildo in those release negotiations), they want as many people in their building as possible with money to spend on concessions. You know how insane the margins are on a coke and a bag of popcorn?

I can’t blame the fans. It cost a lot of money to take a family to the movies anymore. I know when we go as a family it’s an easy $100 at a normal theatre and $200 if it’s a dine in one. The prices have made it hard to be a casual place you go to a couple times a month. There just aren’t that many good movies that can be a made a year to keep people going.

Actually January tends to be great for this since those movies are usually a limited release in late December and open wide in January after Oscar nominations are announced.

Are you new to the movie going experience? There's a reason A Haunted House's campaign was "frick You, It's January."

I agree. The trailer does absolutely nothing to show what that movie really is, although i really don't think there's any trailer that would properly convey what this movie is all about. It's different.
I still can't get my wife to watch it b/c she thinks it will be stupid, and that's 99% b/c of the trailer.

Jesus, how long have you worked in entertainment? That is the most flippant response to the economic reason that theaters are failing that I've ever seen.

If the media want people to spend their money, they have to release a better product. People give their opinions on movies constantly and yet, we keep getting the same 80's-type content over and over and it's getting worse.
