And, again, typically the character being gay is about as significant as other superficial characteristic (being tall, hair color, etc.)

so why do people get so mad about it?

I'm not mad. I just laugh at the transparent agenda.

And the folks that come in and say, "That's not a thing" when it is clearly, obviously, demonstrably a thing.

Normalize LGBT. Make it seem like every other person is gay.

I'm a tolerant motherfricker, but I do not like the hard sell.

They do a pretty good job of making it part of the plot and integrating it into the story rather than "shoehorning" it. It gives her a unique perspective on "deviance" and it proved vital in getting an interviewee to open up. It actually seems fairly organic and the use of the cat as a means to show her loneliness is also well done.

If everyone is gay, then no one is gay.
Gay acceptance is a homophobic plot to make gays no longer special.

the first question out of the studio execs mouths is..."but where's the diversity?"

I have no doubts in my mind that this is a thing. I have become quite accustomed to it now, so it normally doesn't bother me. Basically every show I watch now has at least 1 gay character. The thing is some shows handle this better than others. If the gay person actually adds something to the actual storyline and is a well written character, than their sexuality doesnt bother me at all. But some shows it seems like that token gay person was written into the storyline last minute and every episode they have to mention they're gay, and the character doesnt really do much beside come on screen to say they are gay.

Same with the token black guy. I'm a black guy so obviously i love to watch stuff with black people. But alot of times I hate when it's the token black guy character trope. Meaning it seems like the writers havr no idea how to write a black character, so they give him every black stereotype imaginiable, and he speaks in slang from like 20 years ago that nobody uses anymore. I hate that shite.

But if said black person in the show actually seems to fit into the show, and overall they're just another character and their race is hardly if ever mentioned, then that is what I love.

Plus the actor who plays Holden is gay and not a good enough actor to hide it very well.

Totally agree - I was into Man in the High Castle (Amazon Prime). In Season 3, 2 previously introduced characters (1 well established), just out of the blue turn up gay. They also have this bizarre plot line where a married couple are both gay and acting as beards for each other. I mean, we get it, Nazis are bad. But, we get to the third season and it was like the directive came down, "Hey, you cats don't have any gay characters or gay plotlines. We expect you to fix that in Season 3."

Very obviously strained and forced. Now, they did a little more with DJ Qualls' character's plotline, but not much. It was silly and, frankly, degrading. The rest of the gay stories for that season seemed just for shock value/check the box kind of stuff.

Many actors and writers are queers -- far out of proportion to their numbers in the general pop.

Blacks are 13% of the gen pop and we can't escape them in movies and TV. Yet per Wiki Hispanics are 18% but are almost invisible in Hollywood -- unless it's illegal alien propaganda.

A new report has found that in the top 100 Hollywood films from 2007 through 2018, only 4.5% of all speaking characters were Latino, far out of step with the US population.

The study, titled Latinos in Film: Erasure on Screen & Behind the Camera Across 1,200 Popular Movies, found a dearth of Latino representation in Hollywood’s top movies of the last decade, both in front of and behind the camera.

Published in association with the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, the National Association of Latino Independent Producers and Wise Entertainment, the report outlined the prevalence of Latino erasure or misrepresentation onscreen despite greater diversity efforts in recent years. For the top 100 highest grossing films from 2007–2018, for example, only 3% featured leads or co-leads with Latino actors. Of those roles, 49% went to female actors, and five (of 17) went to one actor: Cameron Diaz. Other top-billed actors included Jessica Alba, Eugenio Derbez and Jennifer Lopez.

“Despite all of the talk about diversity and inclusion in Hollywood and the popular press, these findings represent no change in depictions of the largest ethnic group in America,” the report said, noting that the 4.5% of speaking roles for Latinos is 13.8 percentage points below representation in the US census. Latinos comprise an even higher percentage of Hollywood’s home state – 39% of California’s population, and 49% of Los Angeles.

Yeah, they shoehorned that particular point into the show. Spent all this time building up the connection between those two characters only to have a "but I'm gay" reveal towards the end. Thought it was dumb.

It was super dumb because she was originally supposed to be a love interest for Steve and the gay thing was a last minute audible. It is a great example of the lazy shoehorned in homosexuality that op was referring to.

It's threads like these that make me sad to be addicted to this message board. The racism and bigotry is everywhere.

Your complaint of their wasting time on the trio’s personal relationships is valid.

I’ve gotta wholeheartedly disagree with this statement, lesbian or hetero, when it comes to Mindhunter. What we see of their personal relationships supports the suggestion that those studying serial killers even have components of their own lives, relationships, and personalities that could be construed as part of the profiles they’re creating for these killers.

I don’t want to say anything more for spoiler sake, but especially this season it touched upon the thin line between sanity and insane by highlighting things like that.

Last season it was fine. This season it got way out of hand. Still a great series, but shifting the focus away from the serial killers to the personal lives and politics of the F.B.I. was a mistake in my opinion.
