I’ve also seen it mentioned that he’s supposed to be wearing a Pittsburgh Crawford’s uniform but I don’t know about that.
wrong hat color, but Jersey looks like the ones they wore in 1935

I'm glad y'all posted that image. I've been making an incorrect assumption since I first watched this movie.
While I've seen parts of this movie many times, I've likely only sat down and watched it a couple of times. I'm too old for this to have been a childhood movie for me, and I saw it for the first time as an adult. I remember being agitated that they were just going to act like this black baseball player played on the Yankees in the 1920s, and I've been holding on to that little nugget of agitation with this movie since then. I don't recall that picture from the movie at all. I'd like to think that I would've made the connection that they were acknowledging it a little, but not overtly coming out and saying what I was expecting the movie to bring up during that scene.
I am glad to have been educated today.

right after he gave the 1927 Yankees Baseball to Smalls and The Jet, he says "I have a lot of stuff. Look at all that stuff".
Smalls goes over and looks at his collection and sees the pic of Mertle standing between The Babe and Lou Gehrig.
"YOU KNEW BABE RUTH?!!?"
Trivia Tidbit:
The source photo they used was actually Jimmie Foxx standing in the Middle.

I can see why that would have been agitating if you thought he was actually playing for the Yankees.
So many little hidden gems in this movie honestly...
When the Babe comes to Benny in his dream and gives Benny the motivation to hop the fence and grab the ball from the beast, the Babe drops the great line "Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart kid and you'll never go wrong." Right before Ruth leaves/Benny's dream is over, Ruth looks on Benny's dresser and see's a Hank Aaron rookie card.
Babe: Henry Aaron... I don't know why, but can I have this kid?
Benny: Sure
Aaron goes on to break Ruth's all time home run record obviously. Most people wouldn't think too much about that scene but it's little scenes like that that actually make this not just a regular ol kids movie but a great movie and really well written honestly.

Yeah, Basically if the movie came out today it would be set at the same time it originally premiered. Thats fricking terrifying. And the thing of it is, it would work.
No doubt. 1993 is a lot more like 1962 than 2025 is like 1993.

Which I’m sure had more to do with not having a ton of budget for special effects but it fits so perfectly into what a kid in 1962 would probably be able to envision when it comes to this monster dog that has been exiled to a basement for life.
I seem to recall reading on reddit or somewhere that it was intentional. The dog starts off this absurd caricature, and it slowly morphs into just a dog with each successive time we see it.

No doubt, thanks to your comment I did some digging and found out something that most people apparently knew already. Now I don’t few so bad about this movie being 30+ years old.

correct.
the dog was a legend, so what we see early is a kid's imagination of "The Beast".
Squints' story and depiction is about the myth of the beast and not meant to necessarily be a "true story".
then turns out he was just a dog.

To tie this photo even more to the movie, Jimmie Foxx's nickname: The Beast.
