The plot of the mission impossible movies never matters

We’ve been rewatching all of them in anticipation of Dead Reckoning. I’ve noticed that most of the movies have a McGuffin like Cobalt or The Rabbits Foot that’s critical to global stability. I don’t even know if Cruise actually secures the asset or item before the enemy uses it. The enemy is always some shadow group and there’s rarely carry over from movie to movie plot wise. Maybe a little bit in the last two movies compared to the first 4.
I say this and I still love these movies. Somehow they make the plot interesting enough and often they are somewhat complex with double crosses and twists and of course great stunts that feel naturally set up by them. The plots don’t matter that much and I think it’s amazing they can make the movies as well as they do without that. Kind of refreshing actually that I can have a series of movies I can enjoy as one offs and it doesn’t matter if I remember what happened in the other 5. I enjoy movies with more depth but this series is just pure entertainment and I’m here for it.
Does anybody else feel this way about MI?

yes he does, but its not focused on, its all done very matter of fact, so its easy to miss.
i agree its a fail not to give it more focus then the "ya we got it" and the story is moving on now.

In totality they are better than bond films; They keep getting better
Every third bond movie blows (Not an exact science)
And im obsessed with Bond films

Because this embraces what mission impossible is. Bond is currently rejecting itself right now.

I think the industry term is “reinventing itself for a modern audience.”
Otherwise known as destroying itself in a bout of postmodern deconstructionist rage.

I watched the first one last weekend. Gonna watch 2 and 3 this weekend. After this, what order are the rest I need to watch to get caught up?

What? The big bad was literally the same in both and the apostles were leftover syndicate members from MI5

The same can be said for all spy/chase movies
Indiana Jones chasing after objects
James Bond stopping some villain
National Treasure etc
Think about it, if the hero actually WAS successful at certain points in the plot, the movie would just…end

Is it bad that I've never watched a single one?

You can skip the 2nd one, although the 'create a killer virus to sell the cure' plotline is decent, the movie itself is incredibly fricking dumb and the female lead is atrocious.

I guess I’m the only one who likes the second one. It has some of the best fighting choreography and by far the best music.
And the female lead is Maeve from Westworld BTW

Thandie Newton was young and sexy back then.

They are kind of like a porno flick. We aren't watching for the storyline.
