I'll take BoB also. Pacific had 1 or 2 snoozer eps

The Sledge Hammer episodes were ok but I wish they would have stuck with Leckie and his crew

Exactly.

GK is the most realistic portrayal of the American military ever made.

I haven't seen GK yet, I've been meaning to watch it. Heard nothing but great things about it.

Remember how butthurt the SgtMaj of the USMC was when it premiered on HBO?

MCT: Did you watch the new HBO mini-series “Generation Kill”?

Yeah, I did — I didn’t like it. I watched 15 minutes of it, and it did not portray the Marine Corps. I thought it was a slap in the face to the Marine Corps, especially when you’ve got Marines that know that doesn’t portray a unit in the Marine Corps, from the leadership down.

I watched it for 15 minutes, and even my wife watched it with me. My wife said, “This is not the Marine Corps.” She said, “This is not the Marine Corps that I grew up around.”
I said, “No, it’s not.” And I turned it off.

Well, the truth hurts. Most people at that level quit being Marines a long time ago.

BoB was better mainly because they spent the entire series with the same storyling and group of people, so you got attached to the characters quicker. The Pacific was good, but it jumped around between characters and storylines too much to get flowing as fast as BoB did.

It's far more realistic without all the fake heroics and theatrics of BoB.

Edit: There's a reason that a lot of senior staff and officers hate GK and Evan Wright.

Let me elaborate on my previous post: I enjoyed Generation Kill. I get that its a very realistic portrayal of the modern military. And judging by your handle, I'm assuming you know this all too well.

Seriously, though. Was that some sort of PC bullshite move by the producers? They didn't want to look racist by accurately portraying Japanese POW camps, so they just skipped it altogether.

To me, that's no different than if they'd glossed over the Holocaust in BoB.

fake heroics
It was always my understanding that BoB was pretty accurate.

So GK is more "realistic" and that makes it better? bullshite. BoB is a much better story.

So dramatic music played and time would slow down during certain battles?

That's dramatic effects not fake heroics.

ETA: Theatrics like you said. But not fake heroics.

BoB easily. It is a more coherent storyline.

And this is why BoB and The Pacific are so good IMO. They listened to the stories of the veterans and closely read their memoirs to make these series as realistic as they could. Some scenes in BoB did seem a little Hollywood-esque and overly heroic, but mostly BoB and The Pacific are genuine.

Well, no.

But it's drama. It's supposed to have things like that. You want 100% accuracy and realism, go rent a documentary.

And as far as the plot goes, the only inaccuracy I've ever heard is that Liebgott (sp?) wasn't really Jewish.

quote:

While Liebgott is said to be Jewish in both the book and the mini-series, there has been much confusion over this point now that his family has been found and contacted. They were raised Catholic, were told their father had been, and his dogtags were stamped Catholic (though apparently many Jewish soldiers had their religion falsified on their dog tags). However, all the men he served with are certain he was Jewish. There has been some speculation about whether he converted, though Joe's children say both of his parents were Catholic as well. The question remains as to why he seemingly told everyone he served with he was Jewish when family fact seems to show that he was not, though a fan's investigation into his ancestry reveals that his mother's maiden name was Zimmerman, which is often a Jewish name. It may be that his mother was born Jewish but that Joe was raised Catholic. This is still an issue that needs more investigation.

I'm not sure but this show was based on first hand accounts made novels, none of which were about POWs.

With the Old Breed by EB Sledge is worth reading.

Still, ignoring that part is, to me, just as bad a holocaust denial.
