When Gohan is relevant, he's awesome. Always has been. Just sucks that we rarely get to see that badass locked away inside himself. Hopefully, he sticks around this time.

and then after this arc, he will go right back to books

This is the perfect arc for him to realize there's so much more danger in the universe and he should always be ready to defend earth and be as strong as possible because Goku and Vegeta won't always be there.
Edit: technically, Bell and Buu arcs were the perfect arcs but you know.

How truly disappointing it would be.

I had such a nerd boner for ep 90. Seeing Gohan be so badass again was amazing. The only time I felt more excited was when Gohan went SSJ2 vs Cell. That is tops for me.

It would seem odd if a tournament where no one is direct threatening his family is what pushes him to give up his studies.
His dad died trying to defeat Cell and Gohan stops training after Cell is defeated.
Buu kills everyone, included his mom and Vadel, and Gohan doesn't try to get stronger than what he was when he couldn't defeat him.
Frieza comes back and Goku nearly dies. Gohan still didn't train.
Why train now after the tournament of power?

Because I don't give a shite what causes it as long as it happens. I kind of hope someone kills Videl to send him so far off the edge he never returns. When's the last time we had a meaningful death? 16? And by meaningful I mean they stayed dead.

It is out of Gohan's character, but whatever. It's what the people want!

They need to have someone from another universe kidnap Pan and Gohan fail to stop it, even with his new power level.
That could be the onw thing that would make him never want to stop getting stronger, protecting his daughter.
Belmond (the one that looks like a clown) could find out from his angel that Universe 7 has gotten significantly stronger in such a short amount of time, including Goku. Finding out that Gohan is team leader, he sends one of his Pride Warriors to kidnap Pan in hopes of making him forfeit.
They already have shown that they want to destroy anything they view as evil, and they see Goku as evil. Toppo could even find out and be appalled by his teammates actions and help rescue Pan. Even try to make it a twist by not showing who kidnapped Pan and reveal that Toppo has an extremely twisted view of justice and was the one who kidnaped her.
Just a few ideas to get Gohan being serious and give him some chances at some badass scenes.

Uh... if they lose they get erased? Seems like a threat to me.

But there is no one person threatening it, like Frieza/Cell/Buu. Gohan isn't going to fight Zeno. Not to mention, Gohan's dad asked for this tournament in the first place.
It would need to be something very personal to get him to finally embrace being a warrior.

Some thoughts on yesterday's episode. Man, what's with Roshi being super rapey in the last few episodes? And the chick that transformed from Universe 2? That shite was stupid. I thought it was really cool to see the Universe 6 God of Destruction destroy a planet. Hit is still awesome. Elder Kai offering to unlock Goku's hidden power beyond it's limits was pretty awesome. (Like he did for Gohan) I hope they come back to that in the future.

I thought that episode was terrible, tbh.

I thought Elder Kai offering to do that for Goku was kind of stupid to be honest.
I thought it was just a Gohan thing since at the time it happened they had spent a whole series talking about Gohan's hidden potential and Elder Kai then does the thing. Seems kind of stupid now.
(My memory may be a little fuzzy if that wasn't completely accurate)

Gohan and Krillin both had dormant power brought out by the Namekian Grand Elder Guru on Namek. So it wouldnt be the first time someone else had their dormant power brought out. Old Kai then unlocked all of Gohan's hidden potential on the Sacred World of the Kais. Old Kai offered to perform the same 25 hour ritual on Goku. Not sure if that would give Goku a Mystic or Ultimate form, but I think that would be pretty cool. I doubt it ever happens, because as of right now, it is unique to Gohan.

Have you guys put any thought into how ridiculously OP Cell could become? He has the cells of all the major Z fighters and Frieza. That means he possesses the ability to obtain Frieza's golden form or Super Saiyan Blue. He can receive a Zenkai from Saiyan cells and absorb people to gain additional power/speed.
Zenkai
He knows all of their techniques.
Garlick Gun
Destructo Disk
Special Beam Cannon
He also learned Instant Transmission and can regenerate body parts like Piccolo.
Instant Transmission
Regeneration
The perfect weapon

Zenkai
quote:
Zenkai (??; lit. "Full Recovery") is an ability that is genetically exclusive to Saiyans. The ability is a genetic trait that allows a Saiyan's power to increase substantially after recovering from near fatal injuries. This trait is not exclusive to pure-blooded Saiyans like the lack of hair growth is, as even clones with partial Saiyan genetic data have this ability as well. Examples are half-breed Saiyans, such as Gohan, and the biological menace Cell.

Completely agree. Idk why Toriyama has such a hard on for Frieza and his family. Cell has the potential to be such a better character.

I like Cell. He gave us by far the best version of Gohan.
