The Office: Deposition

So many reasons for Scott to give it to Dunder Mifflin but he sides with them since Wallace says he is a nice guy?
1. He was going to be let go with the merger if Josh didn't leave for Staples.
2. He realizes how underpaid he has been with DM during the negotiation.
3. Wallace has zero intention of hiring him for the job with corporate and hires Ryan instead who is a complete failure.
4. Ryan and corporate treat Michael terribly through the website rollout and creation of the commercial.
5. Michael is broke (a lot of blame on bad finances) since he gets paid terribly by DM.
6. Corporate allowed Karen to attempt to poach Stanley from his branch.
I am sure there are more but this episode has bothered me more and more with each watch through and I am wondering if anyone else has felt that it should have been handled differently?

I always laugh when they ask for 10 copies of Michael's diary, and Toby jumps in "make it 11"
That was so dumb. Someone who's never made a sale would never get that type of promotion

…but he had an MBA. As preposterous as that hiring is there are some examples of people being hired that didn’t fit. Off the top of my head there was hiring of a music major to lead an IT security company.

Michael knew in his heart throughout the entire episode that jan’s lawsuit was bogus. And while the nice guy comment might have been the final push, he wanted to tell the truth all along. So it didn’t take much to ultimately get him there.
At the end of the day, he just couldn’t help doing the right thing. It’s why we all love Michael.

Did you watch the whole episode? Jan submitted his diary without his permission, and then he found out what Jan said about him in a performance review while they were dating.
"you expect to get screwed by your company, but you never expect to get screwed by your girlfriend."

"Just got back from Jamaica. Tan almost everywhere. Jan almost everywhere. Hehe. Oh diary, what a week. I had sex with my boss. I don't know if it's going to go anywhere. Jan was very specific that this is not going anywhere, that it was a one time mistake. But we had sex six times so you tell me. I am definitely feeling very eerie."
Michael: Irie.
Lester: Irie, sorry. "More tomorrow. xoxo, Michael."

Best line:
DM lawyer: Are you familiar with the client?
MS: No but i have seen the Pelican Brief.

Yeah the last two posts sum everything up. He ended up siding with the company because a) he's ultimately a good guy (although he was still going to bat for his lady at first), and b) because Jan already had his diary.
That episode is so great:
The deposition itself has a bunch:
- Them thinking Ryan is a girl from how Michael talks about him
- Jan everywhere
- That's what she said readback
- Etc.
The whole ping pong B storyline is solid.
And then of course there is this gloriousness:

Jan Levinson: Remember, it's not just a pattern; it's a pattern of disrespect and inappropriate behaviors.
Michael Scott : Dis ray. My friend Dis Ray got new specs. Dis ray spect. My friend Inappro drives a Prius with his behind neighbor.
quote:
Diane Kelly : It's admirable, the way you defend a woman who is so obviously ambivalent about her relationship with you.
Michael Scott : Thank you very much. You didn't have to say that.

It's a great episode.
He's broke because of Jan. He was doing fine before they started living together and she was fired.

Probably not in a legit company but people with masters and 0 experience get a free pass in academia and the government regularly.

Dinner Party episode with Jan throwing a candle at it was fantastic.

If he was smart, which we all kind of know he generally isn’t, although he shows flashes of savvy, he would’ve thrown this back in Wallace‘s face during the Idris Elba storyline. He should have told him, I could have buried this company when Jan tried to sue, instead I showed loyalty. So in that regard, I want this dude out of my hair

After working for corporations for years, I can assure you that they regularly place unqualified people in positions of power all the time.

This right here, the way that the company treated him after saving their arse from the lawsuit. Wallace taking Holly away from Scranton and bringing Toby back was criminal.

Taking a step back I don't think it's as far fetched.
The 4 people interviewing:
Michael, Karen;m, Jim and Ryan
Michaels very FIRST meeting with David he told the whole room about sleeping with Jan.. he later went on to say it's just a joke. But if you're the CFO and that was your first impression I'd say it's a red flag.
Jim - great sales numbers but during the interview he fumbled a question when he looked down to see pams more and the look on his face said it all. David was looking right at him.
Karen - less qualified then Jim just doing it to get away more or less.
Ryan- highly under qualified but brought new ideas (website) and language David understands. Ryan just was a good interviewer and you could tell he was really driven. So if it were out of only those 4 options you can see the reason David went with Ryan.

I don't think Jim fumbled it, more than he just got distracted for a split second. I always felt like they were trying to show that Jim killed the interview, but then basically withdrew to stay in Scranton and go for Pam. Because clearly that interview was going great, and Wallace loves Jim...he has great sales numbers, is very personable, is a good employee (when he tries, but Wallace isn't around for when he isn't trying), and they bonded playing basketball a few weeks before that at Wallace's party at his house.
Also, everybody knows how Michael is, but clearly he's a good boss. And a really good branch manager. Throughout the show they consistently reminded us about how Michael's branch was the most (and sometimes only) profitable branch for a company in the midst of downsizing. I always loved when they show Michael in his element and exceeding easily, and wish they would've done that a little more here and there.

I always thought it'd be funny if some writer from The Office wrote an actual transcript of Michael's deposition that included things from the episode and other made up funny answers from Michael.
