Reading that in Book 4 of The Odyssey, Helen of Troy returned to Sparta with King Menelaus. Wonder if she is gonna be in this.

A pure punk rock move would be to cast Ellen Page for that role

I know that lol, it just was uninspiring. I guess maybe because it was very simple and not an epic. It shouldnt have been made with this new one coming out so close.

I may be wrong but kinda thought that was the message.

Huge memories of the great warrior at home, leader of men etc etc....then here comes the real deal old and feeble.

AN anti epic maybe.

Indeed he was. However, I think Nolan is trying to distinguish between the two men's personalities with this shot. Agamemnon is clearly sophisticated and proud while Odysseus is simple and humble.

One of my professors in Honors College did a course once about the warrior-society dynamic, focused on a few examples but Odysseus being the main character. I did not take the course but enjoyed the lecture we had on it while doing the Iliad/Odyssey while she sold us on taking her course. It was only offered once so I presume not many took it

Odysseus has always been one of my favorites b/c he's the archetype for the intelligent/clever opposing the more traditional versions of hero.

Funny enough, that's why he was in the 8th level of Hell in Dante's Inferno

Yeah but the story is fake so who cares. There’s monsters and shite, complaining about accuracy is a moot point.

While the story is not factually true, it was written to explain and define the national identity of the ancient Greek city states. Therefor, it is true in a sense and historical accuracy seems kind of important. The Aeneid did this for the Romans.

Troy had lots of problems but I thought they got Odysseus right, never really saw him in combat but always working the principals.

that’s putting the cart before the horse my friend.

These stories were written (or more accurately spoken), to entertain people during the dark ages after the Bronze Age Collapse. Ancient Greeks didn’t have a “national identity”, they were enemies with each other as often as allies

quote:

The Aeneid did this for the Romans.

The Aeneid was written to entertain Caesar Augustus and create a way to connect the Romas to their Greek heroes. It was written 1000 years after the Illiad and has zero basis in any real history at all.

And then the Britons did it like 1000 years later with the same narrative nucleus

The Aeneid and Homer's epics form a trifecta of ancient literature, epics that tell tales of war and peace, gods and men. In the Aeneid, Vergil draws on Greek themes and characters and blatantly Romanizes them. The resulting epic molded Roman national identity into a cohesive narrative.

Molded into a cohesive narrative for us today to study. The Aeneid was written for that purpose for sure but to take anything from is as having anything to do with anything based on history is like using the Marvel movies to explain our culture

You tell me...

But yeah it was Bronze Age. I looked it up a few nights ago and it was like 1200 BC

For comparison the Persian invasion was like 500 BC. Alexander was like 330 BC
