I'm with you...sloppy writing. The writers and/or director and/or producers had a social agenda and they made damn sure there were search lights pointed at them.

writing was fricking awful....
if I'm on trial for a serious crime i can kiss my attorney and request a mistrial?

Box- first episode he is all about investigating this murder. Then decides "frick it, I guess he's guilty". Retires, and THEN decides to start investigating at the very end of the trial
The point was that he figured that this was an open and shut case, but a part of him always had doubt that Naz actually did it. He obviously had an internal struggle between getting an easy conviction and doing the right thing, which was actually investigating other possible suspects.
In the end, his conscious gets to him, and he acts upon his morals.
quote:
Nas- Young kid starts using drugs in prison? Helping out the tough guy for protection?Totally reasonable, sure it happens a lot. Starts getting neck tats, knuckle tats that say sin? While in the middle of a trial? GTFO
Naz started to feel hopeless. Their case was so strong against him, that he thought that there was no way he was getting out prison for the rest of his life. He thought that his reality was life in prison. How is that not believable?
quote:
Shandra- makes out with a dude on trial for murder in a prison cell while in the middle of her first big time case? Goes out and buys pills for him, then brings them in her vag into the prison cell?
I agree with you that this was a weak line in the story. Its not totally unbelievable but I wish they would have written this differently.
quote:
No one gives an ounce of effort to look into the stepdad, who has a couple of domestic abuse charges against him, until halfway thru the trial?
Why would they look into someone else when they have an extremely easy conviction at their fingertips? That is one of the main themes of the show. Convictions vs. justice. They clearly underestimated the Stone's defense. They looked at Stone as a joke basically throughout the show, and the writers made it clear to us that Stone was not a bumbling idiot like the detective and prosecutor perceived him to be.

And that's just a few. If you consider that nitpicking then idk what to tell you
I consider a lot of that you not really understanding what you watched.

If a show is not "The BEST", people feel the need to run here and criticize it for some reason. It is as tired as bad writing, which The Night Of had a little of.

Quite a stretch. What, in my post, did you disagree with? I merely posted an argument to his points. Sorry if that offends you.

One thing I'll give the writers credit for was humanizing the DA by showing her walking out of the courtroom with the ragged sneakers. It was a nice touch.

If you paid attention, the tattoo was Sinbad, the name he chose. sin on one hand and bad on the other. I'll assume you paid about as much attention to the rest of the series and null your complaints as void.

I gave up on this show after the 5th episode.

To me this was done for two reasons. First is to show how quickly prison can change someone and how far they'll go to stay safe. The second was to make the audience question how innocent Nas truly was. The Nas that got arrested didn't look anything like a murderer. The Nas with a shaved head and tats makes us second guess our first judgement of him.

I understand 100% of what I watched
Just because one may have a different opinion on what happened doesn't mean they didn't understand it

I knew that, as I'm sur everyon else did. But it doesn't come across in a good way with the jury when one of your tattoos says sin. What the frick do they know about his nickname??? My only point was that he became incredibly dumb for a smart guy with some of his actions.
Like i said, the using drugs, smuggling in drugs for Freddy and all that is completely understandable for a kid in that position. And it did show how prison changes people. Just thought they were trying a little to hard to get that point across. In fact I had zero issues with the points the show was trying to make, I just felt it became way too obvious in what they were trying to do

Finally watched this show and read through this thread. Two things:
1) It was a great show
2) This board nitpicks WAY too much

Just finished this series and read through this thread.
The consensus here is my own as well. Great acting, cinematography and directing...enough so to keep you coming back for more...but some of the worst, most unbelievable writing I've ever seen in a crime/courtroom drama. The only character I gave two shits about by the end was Stone.
I hear HBO is planning a season 2. Maybe it will be the reverse True Detective and Season 2 will actually be great?
These 2 people are the least likeable, most unbelievable characters HBO has dreamed up recently.

Ultimately, we know Naz didn't kill her. Naz simply isn't sure whether he did. I understand the drugs and tattoos.

Came across this series last week and finished it.
The episodes Started off strong but got pointless as it moved along. Turturro played his role fairly well.
Very poor writing. The shows would jump from one synopsis to another without warning.
And so they let him off without actually disproving anything ? Just stupid

Other than Sofia Black D'elia being sexy AF in the show, I didn't find it to be very appealing.

The first episode was incredible. After that it was a colossal waste of time.
