No mention of Travolta? No one suspends reality less for me than him IMHO.

Young Travolta was an animal. He had some mega-hits and was solid as an actor.

Saturday Night Fever and Urban Cowboy changed culture.

Charlie Chapman ... Dude couldn't even deliver a line

I can't stand Woody Allen, and on the female side Drew Barrymore is pretty overrated. Samuel L. Jackson deserves a mention as well.

Though I think Natalie Portman turned in the worst performance in the Star Wars Prequeals that I can remember by a supposed to be good actor/actress. Of course the movies sucked and I guess there is only so much you can do with crap.

Another thread where I can say Gary Oldman is overrated.
An insane statement. I happen to like him but Robert Redford is exactly the same in every single performance.

This thread has a lot of fail in it. Someone is not "overrated" because they happen to have been in some shitty movies (all actors have) or have delivered a few sub-par performances. Now many actors may have an inconsistent track record, but that doesn't make them overrated when you take their entire career into account.

For example, Cage and Travolta have both turned in some great, memorable performances. They have also been in some stinkers. That doesn't make them "bad" or even overrated actors.

The thing I like about Nic Cage is that he's never boring. Either he's a complete trainwreck or absolutely brilliant which always makes him riveting to watch on screen. If the movie is terrible, he usually gives a wildly over the top performance which makes the movie at least watchable for the entire duration. Even if the performance is awful, I appreciate the effort. It's better than phoning it in like a lot of actors tend to do.

Travolta
I dont get this knock at all. I know he has been in some bad movies ad I know everyone here thinks scientologists are bad actors; but Travolta has absolutley owned some movies. Face Off, Broken Arrow and Swordfish are some primary examples.

Daniel Day Lewis. Not only is he not a great actor; he's a bad one. He plays the same, brooding, snarling character in every movie.

I didn't feel like reading the whole thread but the answer is Al Pacino.

He started out as a good actor and then spent the last 20 years screaming as a form of acting.

He can perform but hasn't put forth a good effort in so long it is hard to remember the last time he was actually great(other than You Don't Know Jack).

Some of his most memorable roles were just him screaming and over acting almost to Cageian levels.

He has been in some great movies which I believe elevated his status even though he didn't add anything to the movie.

Having said that, he was excellent as Kevorkian. That movie shows me what he can do when writers don't give him a damn soliloquy or rant to scream.

I'm the opposite...I find Cage extremely boring in every movie not named.....

...Raising Arizona.

That movie is hilarious.

Take note, this is how it's done.

No one considers him great, but even calling Vince Vaughn an actor is overrating him.

Sorry, had to bump this thread to illustrate my earlier point.

Solid relatively recent Pacino performances:
You Don't Know Jack
The Merchant of Venice
Angels in America
Oceans Thirteen (just a fun role)
Donnie Brasco (not his typical mob character)
Heat
City Hall

Solid relatively recent Travolta performances:
The Taking of Pelham 123 (not great, he served
the remake well)
Hairspray
Be Cool (weak movie compared to Get Shorty but
Travolta pulled off his part)
Basic
Domestic Disturbance
A Civil Action
Thin Red Line

Nicolas Cage
The Bad Lieutenant: POC New Orleans
(a silly remake but one of Cage's entertaining
over the top performances)
Lord of War
Matchstick Men
Adaptation

While some of those actors' greatest career making roles may have come earlier, and they have made some bad movies, they still can and do eliver from time to time. They are not "overrated". If anything, people tend to forget the talent they actually have.

And for someone to mention Daniel Day-Lewis is ridiculous. That poster clearly hasn't watched the wide range of Lewis' work.

Yes and No. Travolta and Cage can both chew scenery quite well, and that often isn't regarded well. Again, it's all about our definition of said term.

And exactly, Day-Lewis should come nowhere near this discussion, but is an obvious reaction that this thread has turned into "What name can I say to piss people off?"

Harrison Ford

Dude is a legend and has been in some of our favorite movies but as he got older you could tell he was a one-note actor. He's frankly terrible now.

Dude, frick off. If I had a man crush on an actor, it would certainly be Harrison Ford. He and Clint Eastwood truly define awesomeness.
