At least say you like Tom Hanks because he does a very slim amount of characters very, very well. Don't just make stuff up.

His range is pretty impressive.

Bachelor Party
The Money Pit
Dragnet
Big
The Burbs
Turner & Hooch
Joe Versus the Volcano
A League of Their Own
Philadelphia
Forrest Gump
Apollo 13
Saving Private Ryan

Watch Murder in the First and get back to me on that...

Ill throw in Sleepers as well. Bacon was outstanding in that role.

Okay. i haven't read a single thing past this post. Please explain to me how gary Oldman is an overrated actor.

Because he is rated so fricking high.

You are describing this guy as well.

Splash - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe meeting a mermaid
Bachelor Party - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe Partying
The Money Pit - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe owning a new house
Dragnet - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe as a Cop
Big - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe, as a Boy in a Man's Body
The Burbs - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe owning a house
Turner & Hooch - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe, as a Cop
Joe Versus the Volcano - Played Joe
A League of Their Own - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe as an older, well seasoned alcoholic
Philadelphia - Ok I'll give you this one.
Forrest Gump - And This One
Apollo 13 - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe, as an Astronaut
Saving Private Ryan - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe, as an old, well seasoned military officer
Road to Perdition - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe, as a contract killer
The Ladykillers - The movie is not worth commenting about
The Terminal - See above
Charlie Wilson's War - I'll give you this as well, even though it was more campy than anything. Good movie, hardly worthy of "Acting" prowess.
Catch Me if You Can - Played Tom Hanks, All American Joe, as a Cop (read: Government Agent)

That's not a knock against Hanks. Again, it's all in your definition of "great actor." But Brando, Hoffman, Oldman, Day-Lewis, Olivier, those guys have range. Hanks, not so much.

He does All-American Joe better than anyone but Stewart probably. I would say the same about Wayne, Chaplin, Bogart, and lots of other so-called "Great" actors. They have presence and charisma that OFTEN shine through their performances. That's not a bad thing, just the way it is.

This is different for say someone like Daniel Day-Lewis who lets the role overtake him, often to problematic effects (see the There Will Be Blood debacle).

Sorry, I can't take anyone seriously who said Tom Hanks.

The range of roles he has played is second to none, and he does most of them perfectly. Might be my favorite actor.

Always the threat of being well praised, true.

Agreed. I think he is underrated. I'm not sure if he can carry his drama, but I'd like to see him try.

I'll throw this out now. I WOULDN'T have said this two years ago, but given his recent output (and I'm not sure why or why not):

Edward Norton

I thought the guy would great, go up against the greats. He had the boyish appeal of an early Hoffman, and the deft skills to cover both comedy and drama.

But wow, where did he go?

If you're referring to me you should read all of my posts, I make an important distinction. Better to clear that up.

See this is one place where we can say it's a fact. There isn't some random word like "good" or "Great." This is about his films, and the fact is, in terms of Hanks position and appeal, he has displayed very little range. He has a comfort zone and he, generally, sticks in it.

Can't believe some of my favorite actors are on here... Hanks, Heath Ledger, DeNiro, Will Smith, Depp...C'mon Man!

Not sure if these guys are overrated as much as bad, but this thread has gone 10 pages and no one has mentioned Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jason Statham!!!, or (even though I'm a big fan and it could be his movies more than he himself) Patrick Swayze

Dude are you freaking serious? When has anyone ever considered Van Damme an actor?

Although (like any American male) I did enjoy Bloodsport and the lesser known In Hell

No. His work in Primal Fear, American History X, Fight Club, and 25th Hour give him a two decade cushion. He could make ten more Hulk movies and still be considered a good actor based on the mentioned films.

Damn Tarrintino for pulling him off the scrap-heap for Pulp Fiction and subjecting us to some brutal performances afterward.

He was so laughable in Broken Arrow as the villain I watched it again for the sheer comedy.

Wow, I nominate this for worst post in the entire thread.

The Dear Hunter
Kramer vs Kramer
Out of Africa
Defending Your Life
The River Wild
Bridges of Madison County
Adaption
The Hours
Julia and Julia

BTW, Travolta is terrible, almost as bad as the movie Pulp Fiction.
