I am baffled that PTA wasn't nominated for this movie. Maybe one of the best movies I've seen.

I like all of his movies but this one was dull and went nowhere for me.

Maybe that is why it wasn't nominated.

I thought the trailer was leaps and bounds better than the actual movie.

Once again, love all of his other movies, this one not so much. Doubt I will ever watch again.

Really disappointed - he's one of my favorite directors.

There was nothing majestic about this and said little about the human condition compared to his other films (despite the movie seemingly to be ABOUT human issues.)

I am a big PTA fan...and I wanted to like this movie, but I hated it.

I thought Phoenix, Amy, Hoffman, etc were all great, but the story line was

I loved it. My second favorite movie of the year, behind Zero Dark Thirty. Can't wait for Blu Ray.

Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God! It even has a water mark!

Back on topic - boy the remarks in this thread are making me reconsider sinking 2+ hours of my life into this movie.

I think it is still worth the time, but it just isn't great.

I wrote the below a while back in regard to The Master, so it is a little overblown and not entirely responsive to the above quote, but I didn't feel like retyping it.

quote:

No fricking way. That movie was a steaming pile of bile that was thrown up by a cat. fricking horrible movie. Horrible. No pacing. Terrible editing. Dialogue was poor. The acting and interplay between Phoenix and Seymour Hoffman are the only things that made it interesting at all, and it wasn't enough to save that shipwreck from going under like a modern day Titanic. I equate "The Master" to Kate Upton. The media wanted us to believe the hype and by and large people bought in because they didn't want to be the ones who "didn't get it." The same is true of Kate Upton. Everyone thinks she's hot because SI tells them so. But the truth is Kate Upton is a fat, saggy tittied 20 year old with a pretty face. The Master is the same. Its face is pretty, but what makes up the bulk of it, its body, is fat and saggy tittied. Just plain terrible. Drink the kool-aid, though, man. Drink it up.

The only reason I didn't walk out of the theater about half way through was because I believed the hype and I kept thinking: "Okay, it's gotta be about to get good, right?" Ten minutes later I felt the urge to leave again, but I kept repeating to myself "It's gotta be about to get good." And then the movie ended. fricking terrible. Almost asked for my money back.

Well, I guess that's a fair comparison. I love Kate Upton's tits, and I love this movie.

I agree. P.T. Anderson + J. Phoenix + P.S. Hoffman = Movie Gold. One of the best films of the 21st century. I saw Lincoln and I thought D. Day-Lewis was incredible and an obvious choice for best actor...but then I saw The Master and thought Phoenix delivered one of the best performances I have ever seen.

Spoilers Maybe/Not Really

That scene with Hoffman recording himself asking Phoenix all those personal questions (some repeatedly) while they were drinking the potion was AMAZING...Epic even. The scene where Phoenix loses it while at work taking photographs was awesome too. Obviously Day-Lewis is going to win, he played Abe F'n Lincoln in a movie that was about the politics of abolishing slavery. Phoenix would get my vote.
