Yep. They were 80'/90's liberals who became libertarian as the left shifted further left. It's interesting to see how what started as a small group of counter-culture, quasi-anarchist artist had to morph into more mainstream capitalist as the event got bigger. Anarchy is now 0-634,508 in trying to organize and efficiently run a multi-million dollar, 80K+ event...of people who purportedly hate capitalism

It creates a lot of interesting juxtapositions

Then you have Elon's bro as the antagonist. He's everything the founders love and hate at the same time. He has a libertarian streak and can afford to be such because he's bankrolled by his brother. But he also wants to use that money to call the shots...of a festival group founded initially on anti-consumerism ideals.

Started that way and remnants remain, but it has become full of rich people buying tickets for social media clout that bring crazy amounts of supplies and camp in relative comfort. People bring their assistants and pay people to maintain their camps and shite.

It used to be a lot different. I have a buddy that went every year for 10 or so years and stopped. He's a true hippy weirdo, but a super kind person. Lives in a pseudo commune now in Northern California
