Rhaegar + Lyanna = John Snow.

I would think everyone in this thread has read all 5 books. Posting a theory isn't really a spoiler.

Where did the whole R+L=JS originate? Fans?

Yeah, but when you read the evidence, you'll feel that it has the be the case. I was almost embarassed that the theory caught me by surprise. The whole time I just accepted Rhaegar was bad and Robert was right. Read these articles. They are very interesting.

Most signs point to KotLT being Lyanna IMO. Lyanna has the ability to be a great jouster. She rides just as well as any man, 90% of jousting mentioned many times, and she like Arya is quite the fighter. it also would explain Rhaegar falling for Lyanna and the whole war starting. He went looking for the Knight and found Lyanna. It's obvious Reed feels he owes a great deal to House Stark, beyond just being his sworn bannerman. Which would support the fact that he owed them something. That's not to say that it wasn't Reed though. Reed was indeed fighting in Robert's Rebellion alongside Ned and that would have led him to the Tower of Joy. Also the bellowing voice is tough to imagine coming from a woman. Reed could have been given the strength from the old gods to perform so well in the tournament.

Are the Reeds Stark bannermen? I remember when Robb called the banners he actually referred to Howland Reed as Ned's "old friend". (I need to reread the first two, its been years.)

Yes.

I skipped to the end of this thread to not read without first asking what book is this discussion from?

In Storm of Swords the Reed kids, Meera and Jojen, tell Bran a story that we all think we know the background to.

I love these discussions and I'm glad they keep coming up. I also think the knight of the laughing tree was Lyanna. If you buy in to R+L=J then Lyanna makes a ton of sense as TKotLT.

How?
I don't remember anything in season 1 that even hinted to it
Just had a feeling. Ned is way too damned honorable. He always seemed to skirt the question or any talks about it (See his chat with Robert on way to King's Landing). He would get uncomfortable, like he was hiding something. In fact, hiding something so important that not even his best friend (and basically brother) could find out about it.
Then, his talk with Jon Snow before he was heading to the wall when he said next time he saw him he would tell him about his mother. It's like Ned wanted to tell him something a bit more groundbreaking than "yeah, your mom was this sweet whore piece of arse that I was pounding while off at war away from my wife." He wanted to tell him about his nephew's mother, his sister.
They were also making too big of an issue out of JS status as a bastard. I doubted it was some narrative on society. I just had the feeling that Ned as his father was simply not the truth.

Well, there are still several other theories that are also very well fleshed out concerning Jon's parentage. I think the other one that is most has the most traction is the Ned+Ashara Dane=Jon theory. That one would be impossible to get from just the tv show though.

I still don't see how you could possibly guess Rhaegar and Lyanna got together to make Jon from season one.
Guessing that Jon isn't Neds I could see but I don't know if season one even MENTIONED Rhaegar Targaryen
Posted on 3/10/12 at 9:12 pm to CottonWasKing
I meant more like knowing Lyanna was mom.

Just replying in general - Rhaegar was mentioned in S1 when Osha carries Bran into WF crypts.
What nailed L as tKotLT for me was in 'Crows I think...one of the Sam chapters...Maester Aemon tells of Rhaegar always reading about prophesies (a popular Targ obsession- it is known) then one day Rhaegar decides he's not tPtwP, seeks out the Master at Arms and says, "it appears I must become a warrior"
R read something that convinced him his son would be tPtwP, but the reading also stated tPtwP was to be born of a fierce warrior, which, at the time, R was not. He was an artist/musician, and very intelligent.
In that same scene, Aemon mentions misreading the prophs, that dragons are both m and f, And Dany could be tPtwP. Possibly Rhaegar misread it himself, Only to realize later (at Harrenhall) he mixed up mother and father roles in his reading...the warrior was the mother of tPtwP.
So,
R + tKotLT = tPtwP
That's my story and I'm stickin to it

Nice idea.
I just wonder how Jon getting betrayed at the Wall fits into all of this.

The general consensus is he gets reborn as Azor Ahai and that tPtwP is the same person.

Yeah, but reborn from what?
Does he warg into Ghost to keep his spirit alive then Melissandre performs some ritual to pull Jon out of Ghost and into his new form?
