I'm hoping it's because Tom goes on a bender beats the shite out of Daisy with blood flying on the screen Spartacus-style.

I have no idea what this movie/book is about. If the book isn't super long I might read it this summer cuz I feel like a moron for not knowing.

I've had to read it a couple times for school, and it's a pretty quick read if you're not having to stop and write close-read analyses of every chapter. There are a lot of subtleties, but I doubt you'd have any trouble picking up on them.

I hate. So much. The things that Baz Lurhmann chooses to be.

Same here.

Is there any role they won't try and forcefeed LeoCap into?

I enjoyed the Redford version for its subtleness and deliberate slow pace. This looks as subtle as a hammer to the head.

Alas, all the middle aged hens will go cause it looks like Chicago.

It's becoming chic among literary types to bash The Great Gatsby which is a shame. I think it is arguably "The Great American Novel." More writers would be better off trying to emulate Fitzgerlad's straightforward prose than whatever flavor of the week is currently in vogue.

And I love Baz Luhrmann's over the top productions. It fits Gatsby and the Jazz Age. His Romeo + Juliet is inspired lunatic brilliance. And if you're willing to follow his train of thought, a neat critique on Shakespeare. Big fan.

Agreed on every account.

Redford was great as was the rest of the cast except for Tom and Daisy.

Like I said earlier, the more times I watch it, the more I appreciate the subtleness Mia Farrow brought to the role. On the other hand, I still have a hard time buying Bruce Dern as Tom Buchanan. Bruce Dern just comes across as a middle class kind of guy -- not a Yale blue blood.

I think the best performance was Sam Waterston as Nick Carraway. I had always pictured Carraway with a slight build and soft spoken which Waterston brought naturally to the role. It also didn't hurt that Waterston is a true Preppie and Yalie and just seem to bring that sensibility with him.

Scott Wilson as George Wilson was pretty damn good. He's also done a few guest appearance on "Law and Order" so I'm guessing that he and Waterston have remained friends all the these years.

The only other bit of "bad casting" to me was Karen Black as Myrtle Wilson. She just didn't seem right for the role and she seemed to overact the role IMHO.

One other interesting tidbit about the Redford version. When the VHS version came out, they changed the soundtrack. It wasn't nearly as good as the original Nelson Riddle soundtrak featuring "What'll I Do" and other Irving Berlin/Cole Porter-type 20's era songs.

I've read that the producers couldn't agree on a price with Nelson Riddle during his lifetime so all the original VHS's came with a really bad/changed soundtrack. Later, the producers finally worked out a deal with Riddle's estate and the original (i.e., MUCH better) soundtrack was restored when the DVDs finally started coming out.

The original pick for Daisy was Ali McGraw. But, when she left the studio head for Steve McQueen, she was out. The next pick was Natalie Wood. But, by the time they got around to her, she was already committed to another project. So, Mia Farrow got the part.

This sounds like something straight out of The Kid Stays In The Picture. Was the studio head you're referring to Robert Evans?
