I have seen The Godfather parts I and II many, many times but I have never actually seen part III. I recently re-watched I and then II on Netflix and then I saw III while scrolling. I don't think III has gotten very good reviews and is certainly thought of as the worst in the trilogy. Should I watch III? I've gone through 39 years of life thinking The Godfather I and II are two of the best movies ever so I'm tempted to leave well enough alone and not watch III. Does it bring a good conclusion/closure to the Corleone family? Thoughts?

You're good just watching the first two. The third seems more like a "what if" than an actual continuation of the first two films.

It's like watching the prequel to Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid or Alien VS Predator. It doesn't add any enjoyment to the original. It's interesting more in the fact that it got made than in it's value as a part of the original story.

It's a good movie, it's just not a good movie by Godfather standards. Honestly it doesn't even have the same feel as the 1&2 imo. Shouldn't ruin anything for you

The Godfather Part III had the unfortunate luck to have actress Winona Ryder pull out at the last minute, leaving Francis Ford Coppola no choice but to cast his daughter in the role Ryder was supposed to take. What you got was one of the worst performances in mainstream film history from a woman who, in her defense, had absolutely no acting experience whatsoever. When you combine that with a plot that was somewhat far-fetched, you are left with a film that left a bad taste in the mouths of more than one critic.

Be that as it may however, the film still got solid reviews due to the performances of Pacino, Talia Shire and Andy Garcia (who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance). The Godfather Part III was still nominated for 7 Academy Awards - including one for Best Picture. So it's not a terrible movie by any stretch of the imagination. I think the problem is the first two Godfather films are so good, Part III just looks bad in comparison.

I'd still watch it for the closure. It'll just be that one that you watch that one time for closure and probably never really watch again.

The version where they combine 1&2 and it plays chronologically with added scenes is the GOAT

I'm in the same boat - have never seen III.

GFIII is like the Star Wars prequels. Both have an intriguing premise and overall story, but the actual execution leaves something to be desired.

sofia was bad, no doubt
the interaction between her and garcia (who was great) was off-putting and awkward

the vatican narrative was a nice twist though and really did illustrate that michael's business was not really that different from theirs

Three things doomed GFIII...

Studio refusing to pay Robert Duvall (Copletely changed the script)
Sofia Coppola (Hayden Christensen bad)
Cinematography (Looks like a completely different universe)

The helicopter attack removed any doubt that this was a run of the mill Hollywood gangster movie and not your classic Godfather pic.

Pretty mixed reviews. I think I'll watch it with expectation that it is nowhere near I and II.

Agree. Love when you can catch the chronological version.

Having to write out Tom and Sofia Coppola's acting were far and away the worst aspects of the film, but there were other issues as well.

The story is a convoluted mess, very much unlike Parts I and II. The Vatican/Immobiliare storyline was hard to follow, the cousin love story between Andy Garcia (Sonny's son) and Coppola (Michael's daughter) was extraordinarily weird. They try to show that Michael feels incredible guilt for his evil deeds, but I don't feel like FFC and Mario Puzo did a good enough job of it or expounding on it.

Michael felt guilty for killing Frodo and he wanted his family to have legitimacy. I don't think he regretted what he had to do overall, he just was tired of it and wanted to enjoy what he worked for.

I love most of the story, but as has been mentioned, the lack of Tom was distracting and unfulfilling. Other parts were really good such as the Vatican scenes. But too many misfires made the movie unGodfather like, if that makes sense.

Pacino has several memorable scenes in Godfather III. I think it's worth at least one viewing.

It may seem far fetched but, like the other two films, is actually loosely based on real life events. Look up "Propaganda Due," "P2 Conspiracy," or "Vatican Banking Scandal." That shite went down, or something similar anyway...
Either way, not a good movie.

See how a one letter typo can completely change everything? Now if Michael killed Frodo instead of Fredo, you might have had a good, but really confusing, film. Even the Corleones would have to fear Gandalf's wrath.
