Is this another one of those shows that have fabled diverse characters that never existed? I love history with a twist of agenda.

It’s a realistic, entertaining show, and you wear your ignorance like a fricking necktie.

But the main issue — the unforgivable faux pas The Gilded Age makes — has nothing to do with Nixon or the sets or the camerawork and everything to do with the show’s writers shoehorning woke and inaccurate political opinions into 1880s America. The series has black characters, because of course, it must. That is literally a requirement for any show on television now. Any new series must meet a diversity quota. One wonders if there is an actual list with boxes to tick for each pitch. 4.5 black characters? Check. 2 gay characters? Check. One agender non-binary queer questioning two-spirit character? Still waiting for that one to show up but I am reasonably certain xim/xer will eve

Not just you. There are plenty of morons who think that gays and successful minorities shouldn’t exist in period dramas.

I think gays and successful minorities should occur in period dramas at the rate they actually existed and participated in accurately reflected history.

It’s not that they have those protected groups in a historical drama or piece of fantasy (Witcher, WoT, RoP, etc.) it’s that they’re vastly overrepresented in 90% of them.

Dumb revisionist history like Bridgerton, have at it. I can enjoy me some Bridgerton, because it’s not taking itself seriously. Gilded Age is smelling its’ own farts every scene. And I really like Gilded Age.

Is it really a period drama if most of the historical details that make a show a period piece are inacurate? Why don’t you just admit what it is. A historically inaccurate drama with a diverse cast for the sake of diversity. Doesn’t mean the show can’t be entertaining. I think Bridgerton is entertaining but I see it for what it really is. Soft core porn for women to fingerblast themselves too.

The Gilded Age isn’t historically inaccurate for the period it represents (which is the show we’re talking about here).

What parts do you believe are inaccurate about The Gilded Age? Much like Downton Abbey, it weaves in historical characters with fictional. But as far as populations it represents, it’s not inaccurate. Especially when you consider who some of the fictional characters are modeled after.

Smithsonian article

And for what it’s worth, Bridgerton doesn’t take itself that seriously in terms of period accuracy. It’s a bit apples and oranges to The Gilded Age.

Most of the historical details are inaccurate?

Tombstone plays fast and loose with historical details. Would you claim that it wasn't a period drama?

My wife had me watch this with her, and I enjoyed the first season a lot more than I thought I would. I especially liked George Russell bitch slapping all those smarmy old money types.

The black characters in this show are true to the age and depictions of successful blacks at the end of the 19th Century have been rare. It’s not “a take” or spin. Those families existed and were very well-to-do.

There is one gay subplot. One. The men are closeted and one is trying to make an advantageous marriage (to a woman) to secure his fortune.

I hope the characters get nastier to each other in season 2. They were much too nice in season 1. These people were not kind to outsiders nor to those who stepped out of the norm. In fact, they were downright cruel. See: The Age of Innocence.
