Finished Deadwind. Good all around. 9/10.

Going to check out the 4 part BBC miniseries Retribution next.

Retribution was underwhelming, but Bodyguard is absolutely riveting.

Still haven't seen Luther

We're just about finished with Luther. It's good.

If we're talking subtitled series worth checking out, I'll throw Dark in the mix. It's confusing as hell, so you REALLY have to pay attention. I think there's a big thread on it somewhere on the board.

Watch 1983. Polish series on Netflix with subtitles or dubbed English. Very amazing show in same vein of Man in the High Castle but 100x better

The Fall
Marcella

Paranoid
Dr. Foster (not a detective series, but still a mystery)
The Tunnel
Collateral
The Missing

I’ll have to check out the Missing and Paranoid, but Dr. Foster looked like a Murder She Wrote type show so I passed it up.

Luther is a damned good hard-assed detective type show. Ended too early because they couldn’t hold on to Idris Elba.

Happy Valley is a little lighter though for a detective show, more like a cop show wherein you know what’s happened.

River is very meh in my opinion. Great acting, good premise, but it would’ve been better as a movie rather than a drawn out series.

British shows:
Bodyguard on Netflix is very good.
The Jack Taylor series of movies are good.
Hinterland I just started.
Wallander is good, but I it could’ve been better.
Broadchurch is good for the first two seasons (haven’t seen the third).

I’ve got Secret City (Australian), Shetland (British), and La Mante (French) on my list but have yet to start them.

Have you seen Tin Star (Amazon Prime) or Fortitude (AP)? Might be worth the watch for you. One is Canadian and the other Norwegian but both are filmed in English.

So, hopefully, the OP sees this and will change the thread title to something about “Detective Procedural Series” or the like.

Dr. Foster is a bit more of a drama than a detective procedural. If you wanted to watch Bodyguard and the Mrs. wanted to watch Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, Dr. Foster would be a good compromise.

On the Bodyguard note, couldn’t agree more with you. It was simply fantastic.

I also recently completed the 4-part Australian miniseries Deep Water on Netflix. It was pretty good. I think I’d have liked it a lot more if I hadn’t have just seen Bodyguard. It’s much sleepier and drier than Bodyguard, but still good if you’re short on options. I give it a 6/10

You’ve got some other really good recommendations here. Thanks. I just started the French series, The Frozen Dead, but will add these to the list.

Luther and Happy Valley are both awesome. We liked Marcella until the very end of the last season.

A lot of good shows mentioned in this thread. Three of my favorites are:

Shetland
DCI Banks
Line of Duty

The only problem is that I don’t know how accessible they are currently. I think PBS has the rights to all three, and they might not be available on streaming platforms.

HailToTheChiz

Movies are far better watching them without being dubbed.

I know enough Russian to get by and many of the movies are dubbed poorly in English.

But how can one watch a movie like Seven Samurai without subtitles and in Japanese.

The Frozen Dead was good. Loved the chilly Pyrenees setting and opening episode. I got a little bored towards the middle of the series.

7/10

On to Tidelands, and then going to circle back to some of the other mentions in this thread.

Tidelands was meh. Had no idea what I was getting into.

Seven Seconds was phenomenal, albeit annoyingly cliche.

Checking out Perfume next.
