You know what Forget about it. I need to stop trying to wrap my mind around the "how" of time travel and just wait for the payoff and decide then whether I liked it or not.

Savitar could be a time remnant gone bad which was created by Emo Future Flash. He may have been created when Barry was at an all time low, bitter and extremely angry. Thus making the time remnant (Savitar)a rouge - bitter and extremely angry.
This would explain why Savitar has to kill Iris. If he doesn't, then Barry never goes into emo mode and thus he never creates Savitar.

That sets the stage for rejuvenated Emo Barry from last week to re-insert himself to the present to help Present Barry to defeat future evil Barry (i.e. Savitar).

I think this is on the right track.
In this timeline Barry went to the future, but every time he does that it can change the timeline. That's why Cisco wouldn't let him leave. He had to change Emo Barry who becomes Savitar.
Does Iris die at the end of this season?
Can Emo Flash exist in a timeline that is without Iris and he doesn't become Savitor?
