He had some sort of strange connection with the Butcher's wife when he asked for the haircut. They were sort of acting the same delusional way.
For that matter, I wonder if we're going to find out what happened to her co-worker. I have the feeling we will. I'm on the same wavelength, too.

Any chance that the Indian decided to side with mom and bear?
I think this is very possible. I'm thinking that Bear has secretly sent the Indian to kill Dodd. That would certainly explain why he's not interested in the phone calls from Ed about having him in his trunk.

That could be, but I think he's gone off on the beat of his own drum. He acts like he's had enough of the lot of them. He lost it in the bar, or maybe he found it. Didn't he have a sort of outer space experience as well at one point in an earlier episode? And, maybe the haircut, he was going to change who he was with that happening in more than just a physical nature.
Also, for many natives, the cutting of hair by oppressors has long represented the submission and defeat of a People, through humiliation.
And then there's this:
Why Indians Keep Hair Long
Maybe that's why the scissors were poised there for such a long time when he escaped. He's still very aware and dangerous.

And then there's this:
quote:
It seems that during the Vietnam War special forces in the war department had sent undercover experts to comb American Indian Reservations looking for talented scouts, for tough young men trained to move stealthily through rough terrain. They were especially looking for men with outstanding, almost supernatural, tracking abilities. Before being approached, these carefully selected men were extensively documented as experts in tracking and survival.
With the usual enticements, the well proven smooth phrases used to enroll new recruits, some of these Indian trackers were then enlisted. Once enlisted, an amazing thing happened. Whatever talents and skills they had possessed on the reservation seemed to mysteriously disappear, as recruit after recruit failed to perform as expected in the field.
Serious causalities and failures of performance led the government to contract expensive testing of these recruits, and this is what was found.
When questioned about their failure to perform as expected, the older recruits replied consistently that when they received their required military haircuts, they could no longer 'sense' the enemy, they could no longer access a 'sixth sense', their 'intuition' no longer was reliable, they couldn't 'read' subtle signs as well or access subtle extrasensory information.
So the testing institute recruited more Indian trackers, let them keep their long hair, and tested them in multiple areas. Then they would pair two men together who had received the same scores on all the tests. They would let one man in the pair keep his hair long, and gave the other man a military haircut. Then the two men retook the tests.
Time after time the man with long hair kept making high scores. Time after time, the man with the short hair failed the tests in which he had previously scored high scores.

I also remember Joseph Campbell once lecturing about how well the Native Americans re-adjusted when they returned from war. It had to do with them going back to their people and the sweat lodges and other ceremonies.
Don't know if it applies here, though,
just an interesting side note. Definitely an intriguing character.

Wow that is crazy interesting and if they have gone to that level to tie in the hair with the Indian then the show deserves even more credit than it gets. Either way its got me hooked and counting days until the next episode.

How does the butcher know Milligan's phone number to call him about Dodd being in his trunk? shite, how does he even know who Milligan is?
He saw the newspaper headline saying Milligan was holed up in that hotel. He just called the hotel and asked for Milligan's room.

Indeed. I worked with a long haired Navajo and he told me the same thing. Like whiskers on a cat.

The Indian was going on the run, he was on the front page of the paper - MANHUNT...
Nothing more than that, he was getting the F out of dodge.

I did LOL about the newspaper having an article about, "Out of town hitman staying at the Luxury Suites Hotel!"

He asked that question before we saw the newspaper in this week's episode. It was not clear until it was shown this week

Yes, I realized that as I read more of the thread. The time juxtaposition in these last two episodes was a little confusing at some points.

Did not see the Dodd pop coming at all. I suspect the friend at the hotel is in her room with a broken neck, but we may never know unless there becomes a reason to go there in the story.
Every time I see the Butcher of Luvern, I think of Jesse on Breaking Bad calling Todd a "dead-eyed Opie lookin' motherfricker".
This damned show just keeps getting better.

Unless I'm missing something, I'm pretty sure the Indian wasn't expecting Dodd to be at the cabin, he was only after the Blomquists and had no way of knowing they had kidnapped Dodd.
They had Dodd's car.

I think season 2 has passed season 1 as far as which is better. This season has nailed every character whereas last season was carried by the two stars. No matter what story each episode is geared toward, they nail it. Both seasons are great but if I had to pick 2 gets the vote now.
I agree. Season 2 has been killing it. Characters, scenes, music has been perfect.

I liked the first season, but season 2 is better. This might be Ted Danson's best character since Cheers. They nailed every character.

I think there may end being some sort of connection between the Indian and one of the two local law enforcement officers from wartime. Maybe the Indian saved one of them. He is a medal winner.
I'll go ahead and say that's gonna happen. I'm 1 for 2 so far and have hit one out of the park. Hey, if it's baseball that's .500 batting average and I'm going to the Hall of Fame. Worse I can do is .333 and that ain't bad.

Good call.
So is a shootout between Milligan and the cops at the Sioux Falls hotel a given?
