I recently gave The Departed a rewatch and it's still up there for me as one of my favorite movies of all time, if not my favorite overall. I have noticed it seems to get a little more hate as the years have gone by. Was just curious to see how this film holds up for everyone else.

Original is superior.

Especially on rewatches. Scorcese's has a ton of style, and a solid amount of charm that makes it well liked, but it's a soulless movie compared to the original.

It’s definitely aged worse for me as the years have gone by in terms of how high I regard it as a well made movie, but it’s still an awesome fun movie

One of my favorite quotes about a movie was on this board (or one of the Ole Miss boards):

"I didn't think a movie could make me sick of watching people getting shot in the head; this movie made me sick of watching people getting shot in the head."

One of my least favorite of Scorsese's and an obvious lifetime achievement award winner.

I like it but never really got the hype of it being a GOAT contender or anywhere near it. Even among Leo and Scorsese movies it's probably not in the top 5

Damn! Guess I’m in the minority on this one. I can see why some people aren’t high on it though. Does have some odd editing moments and cuts. Feel like it got chopped up in the editing room pretty good, but I love it

I remember watching it for the first time at 14 years old and thought it was the greatest movie ever. Watching as recently as 2 weeks ago, it's not as good as the first time I watched it, but I still think it holds up and it entertains the hell out of me every time I watch it.

I think I'm the opposite of most - I didn't think it was incredible originally but it's grown on me and now it is one of those movies with almost infinite rewatch quality

Yeah, the Departed is fine, but it’s not one of Scorcese’s greater works. I think Gangs of New York is way better than it.

It seems sort of cheesy now. Best Picture feels like a lifetime achievement award.

Did you get the ending with the rat?

It was subtle but it represents rats.

Yeah, that rat looked fake. Terrible rat. That rat needed to be killed. On the editing room floor

I’m not saying it’s the same movie but it has the same effect as the Boondocks Saints in that it was a lot cooler when you first saw it as a teenager compared to as an adult. Still entertaining and I like it well enough to spend some time watching if I see it on, just not as great upon rewatch

I really didn't like Marky Mark, Martin Sheen, or Alec Baldwin's characters. Felt like they belonged in a different movie that I didn't really want to watch.

Anthony Anderson was totally unnecessary and really made the ending confrontation feel over the top.

Unpopular opinion: I didn't mind the rat at the end. Seems like the kind of visual flourish people love to see Taranatino make.

The Departed could have been an absolutely fantastic movie, and it was right up until the last five or ten minutes or so.

Spoilers...

I remember loving it, and then when everybody just keeps getting shot in the head it felt cheap and stupid. It felt like they had no idea how to end it and were just like "frick it, let's kill off everybody." With a better ending, it would have been legit awesome. But that shite ending made an awesome movie into just a really good one IMO.
