This. I was thinking that someone other than Hal using the ring triggered the ring to go into an update mode that notified the Guardians or brought the Halogram forward to access the situation. In the comics you had situations where GL's died and the ring sought out their replacement and began their crash-course training until the Guardians could get to them. Hence the Halogram thinking the worst when he saw someone wearing "his" ring.

I took it as more of an alarm system. Hal set it up to be notified when that type of event takes place.

Well I wouldn't say I believe it's true. Obviously there can be more than one Green Lantern per sector, and if we really want to get into it then technically there can be more than one Green Lantern per ring. I doubt they're going to be going that deep into Green Lantern lore, but they do at least show both Hal and John using this ring.
That said, they definitely wanted us to believe it's true within the context of this show. It wasn't a stretch for anyone to draw the conclusion that Hal Jordan would die. It would have been more of a stretch to believe he wouldn't.

Well I don't know about all that. When this show ended in 2026, there was no GL ring on the screen. I'm betting that is why Guy Gardner was shown in previews. It will at least be addressed in some fashion.
There are obviously always more than one Green Lantern. Just usually only one per ring.

We dont know that John has taken over for Hal. It looks like he hasnt, thats why he checks for a ring.
It seems that they may be hinting that Guy took over for Hal. but like the comics, they could have multiple GLs at some point.
im wondering if we see a Parallax type story come into play. We know Sinetro is in the show. Could see the Sinestro Corp. Could see Hal join that as this version of Parallax.
The Green Lantern mythos is pretty deep so the show really has a ton of different avenues to go down. excited to see what they choose to do.
