5 episodes in and pretty dang good so far.

Mini series length really lets them expand on parts of the story that the other adaptions haven't. They actually are covering the missing/dead baby of Villefort and Mrs. Danglar. Though they changed the way it was discovered.

Not too many changes so far but kind of confused as to why they are making Caderousse a good guy. Not a fan of that at all.

The casting has been very good. The lead actor makes a really good Count and this Mercedes is more of how I pictured her in the book. Irons was great as the Abbe and probably the best portrayal of the Abbe yet imo. The guy from The Gilded Age is really good as Danglar too.

Outside of Caderousse my only complain is Albert. Albert was possibly my favorite character in the book and he just isn't book Albert. The emotion and passion is just missing. Also the friendship he made with the Count doesn't come across very well either.

Overall good so far though.

PBS+ has been around for years. I subscribed to it through Prime in order to watch Broadchurch a few years back. Sleepy Joe was president at that time. As another poster pointed out, this is the equivalent of buying stamps.

But yes, PBS and especially, NPR, disqualified themselves from receiving federal funding by producing slop and alienating approximately half the country (likely representing a majority of the tax revenue used to fund them). As someone else said, FAFO.

I haven't read the book since High School so I can't remember all the specifics. And I read the abridged version, which was still like 600 pages

Yes, it's a beast of a book. I think my copy is 1200 pages or close to it. But I thoroughly enjoyed all 1200 of those pages.

I agree. Didn’t love that either. This and their outright refusal to pronounce any names the French way were my biggest complaints.

This

Pronouncing them HAY Dee and Al Bert drive me nuts. That and saying Castle Dif instead of Chateau Dif.

Having to watch one at a time for now. Liked the first episode but the difference between Fernand of this and Fernand in the 2002 movie is pretty shocking. Never read the book.

Weren't Fernand and Dantes BFF in that one? Fernand hated Dantes pretty much from the get go in the book.

This one is closer to the book so you're going to see some pretty shocking differences all around. I used to love that movie but don't think i could view it the same after reading the book.

Yes, I think childhood friends. Things went sour when Fernand got jealous of the commoner, Dantes, having great success and a hot fiancé' so he schemed with Villefort.

The amount of botox and lip filler available to Heloise Villefort back in the early 1800's is kind of baffling. In an otherwise great cast, this lady stands out as one of the worst actresses I think I've ever seen.

Watched episode 6 last night.

SPOILERS FOR EP 6

So I figured Edmond and Mercedes were going to end up together in the end (and I was going to be mad about it) because the Abbe made a point to tell Edmond to marry her while he was in prison. Plus they had her give him the watch and he held on to it for his entire imprisonment. And Mrs. Iwy says Haydee is too young so it wouldn't look right with those two ending up together and they have done virtually nothing to show the closeness Edmond and Haydee had. Now Fernand is abusive to Mercedes so all the signs pointing to Edmond and Mercedes reunion.

But maybe I was wrong. That or they are just adding some drama. Because in this episode he revealed the watch/his identity and virtually told her he had moved on similar to the book. Still think they'll end up together but holding out hope it will stay faithful.

PBS Masterpiece is what I'm watching it on. It's an add on to Prime.

I had a PBS Living subscription add on on Apple for like $2.99 that I had just so the Mrs. could watch Antiques Roadshow that I thought it was going to air on. But it was actually a different PBS subscription. I think it's $7.99 after the free trial.

Going to cancel it after I'm done with the show because there aren't many things on there to make it worth keeping the subscription.

Because their federal funding was cut and they have to depend on private donations like other broadcast stations.

I had to subscribe to it under Biden’s Autopen (Masterpiece Theater programming like Monte Cristo & don’t know about PBS’s other programming), so when did funding get cut to cause need for subscriptions back then?

They’ve long used private donations (that’s what you’re doing, donating) to supplement funding on the federal level which has waxed and waned over the years. That was the biggest complaint from when Johnson signed the public broadcasting bill, that funding wasn’t automatically secured. That shifted to purchasing streaming options when it became more popular than broadcast TV. PBS federal funding has never been a permanent funding proposal.

This last cut was a total severance that makes them dependent on private donation alone.

If I wait long enough between subscribing and allow some seasons to show all or at least most of its episodes I can watch a few seasons for a month’s charge, but it’s very sporadic with quality programming in English and requires a longer wait in between subscriptions to make it worthwhile than other services. Last time I even had some promo thru Prime for $2.99 for 2 or 3 months, and right before the second promo priced month was to be charged I cancelled as there was nothing else I wanted to watch.
