I consider myself a Coen fan. Arizona, Fargo, O'Brother and No Country are among my favorite movies of all time. I liked some of the others too. I fricking hate TBL.
Huge Coen guy and while I don't hate TBL, I just have never warmed to the movie like the others. I never watch it.
But then again, I've always really liked the homage/satire of Hudsucker Proxy which a lot of Coen fans trash.

It's ok, but there are much better films out there. It's not as good as the hype.
What hype is surrounding this movie?
Other than people liking it and the fact that it is very quotable, I don't really hear people acting like it was the greatest of all time.

I think this movie is properly rated because for every super fan, there are almost as many haters. I watched it again for the first time in a while. I put it in to go to sleep (big mistake), I watched the whole damn thing. The whole chancery of the dude's situation is great. The characters are great including Julianne Moore who I don't always like. And, the Stranger, I love his lines...
Intro:
Way out west there was this fella... fella I wanna tell ya about. Fella by the name of Jeff Lebowski. At least that was the handle his loving parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. Mr. Lebowski, he called himself "The Dude".
....
only mention it because sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude, in Los Angeles.
Outro:
The Dude abides. I don't know about you but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners.

You have to watch it a couple of times.
This. The only part I actually laughed out loud at the first time I watched this was when The Jesus gave his brilliant diatribe in the bowling alley.
But the 2nd and 3rd viewing I started to catch more jokes in the dialogue and it is one of the funniest movies all time. And that's kinda like my uhhh... my opinion man.

I can say I like the just your opinion man thing. Other than that, I have no use for it.

I also 'didn't get it' the first time, but after the 3rd viewing it became my favorite comedy ever.
IMO this is because so many things in the movie play off of each other and come full circle: "this will not stand", "he's a nihilist", "shut the frick up Donnie", etc.
When you watch it again and you hear that stuff for the first time, knowing the payoff later, it becomes 100x funnier.

it's a good movie, but it's one that people devalue by talking it up too much
Now you are trying a bit too hard to be different. It's a top 5 comedy of all time, regardless if it's become too popular for you to like.

Also, saying Bridges was cast badly in this movie is the most asinine thing I've ever read on TD. And yes I realize the weight that statement carries.

I feel sorry for people who don't see the genius behind this movie.

ETA, but he really had no chance. So, yeah, casting may not have been the true issue. terrible character in a horrible movie. No one could have made anything good out of it. Thanks.

It was a movie that I had put off watching for 10 years saw it for the first time in 2008. When I did first see it I liked it but didn't love it.
But now everytime I watch it get it gets better and better each time I see it. Not many movies I can say that about.
