In a year in which cinema has been seemingly shut down, there has still been plenty of great work to see—if you know where to look

For those with the desire and the time, the year to date has yielded a strong, diverse slate of movies, and most of what’s on this list can be found fairly easily at this point. Consider our top 25 an opportunity to play catch-up before we find out whether Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will even be released in time to round out 2020’s roll call

No disrespect, but I thought The Assistant was boring as hell. 87 minutes of waiting for something interesting to happen . . . .

Based on Ozark I like Julia Garner, but her expression never seemed to change, and her tone of voice remained monotone.

The Way Back: Affleck does a great job as a washed up high school basketball star dealing with alcoholism and a ton of grief.

The Trip to Greece: If you liked the other movies in the franchise, this is a good watch.

The Invisible Man: Better sci-fi horror than what you'd expect.

Birds of Prey: Fun superhero stuff. Popcorn movie.

The Assistant: Extremely well done for an indie. Avoid if you're triggered by #metoo.

Bad Education: Very good. Extremely well acted. Community puts blinders on to keep their school at the top.

Da 5 Bloods: Avoid this.

God, I haven't seen most of these except the ones that went straight to Netflix or Prime.

Not gonna spend the $20 rental fee on some of these.

Saw D 5 Bloods, it felt like a TV show...like if Magnum P.I. and his buddies all went back to Vietnam for some reunion and only brought with them crappy dialogue.

I turned it off halfway through, the script just sucks and it's flash-back, flash-forward, the script is about as good as the novel Chevy Chase wrote in Funny Farm.

I can understand that. After realizing that they were going to show the monotony of her existence in that office, I told my wife, "It would be pretty ballsy if they just showed her working and for nothing to happen and then she turns off the light and goes home."

So were critics too afraid to give this a bad review?

Da 5 Bloods was boring. Worst thing you can have for a movie like that

I don't know, in this cancel culture probably. The film is supposed to be about retrieving gold but all the conversations are about race.

And it takes place in the present day but Spike has flashbacks to Vietnam - and it's the same guys! It's like they didn't age.

I don't care if Spike Lee is going to Spike Lee and be heavy handed but don't be boring. And since it's boring the preaching gets in the way in whatever story he was trying to tell. The story is really nothing; this isn't Three Kings and it's not some fun treasure hunt. It's guys sitting around a lot bitching and drinking booze.

This review from RT sums it up for why it's getting good reviews:
quote:

Adds an urgent, vital and clear voice to the current national conversation focused on societal and institutional racism.

So if you want to watch a boring, unfocused version of the above, this movie is for you.

Sonic the Hedgehog might be the best movie released so far this year, so I don’t see the point in this.

Ditto. Can’t believe how bad this was. Spike has lost it.

Haven't seen it yet, but maybe he sucks at war films?

A lot I still need to see on that list. Looking forward to watching Bacarau, First Cow, and Shirley soon.
