I took the family to see this movie on Friday. When I asked why there were so many kids wearing suits in the theater, my 14 year old rolled her eyes and told me "They're Gentleminions, dad."

NY Post

quote:

A bizarre TikTok trend has led cinemas to ban groups of rowdy, suit-clad teens from screenings of “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

The trend sees groups of teenagers referring to themselves as “Gentleminions” wearing suits and bringing bananas, a reference to the Minion’s favorite snack, to the theater.

Videos of the trend using #Gentleminions have been blowing up social media, with some videos garnering a million views apiece.

The self-proclaimed “Gentleminions” wear formal suits and go to the movie screening in large groups and cheer loudly as it begins to play. The actions of these teens are purposefully taken from the movie’s super-villain Gru, including the suit and copying his hand motions throughout the movie.

quote:

The teens have been accused of disrupting the movie by making noise and throwing things.

Staff at some cinemas have even said they’ve suffered a “massive” financial impact, having to issue refunds because of the bad behavior, according to the Mirror.

A Twitter user shared a photo of a sign at ODEON Cinemas in the UK that read, “Due to recent disturbances following the #gentleminions trend, any group of guests in formal attire will be refused entry for showing of ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru.’ Thank you.”

quote:

While cinemas aren’t happy with the suits, Universal Pictures has expressed its support.

“To everyone showing up to @Minions in suits: we see you and we love you,” Universal tweeted.

The kids in our theater were rowdy, but fun. No bananas were thrown. They made a movie I wasn't really interested in seeing more enjoyable. The past three years have been awful for everyone, and if some kids want to dress up to see their favorite movie let them have at it.

social media is truly going to end up being one of the downfalls of our society. Tiktok in particular.

I help manage a facility and back in the fall there was some retarded "challenge" that consisted of absolutely nothing besides vandalizing property, specifically breaking bathroom doors off the hinges. It would take me 2 hands to count the amount of times we had to replace bathroom doors because of little shithead frickers with no good parental upbringing trying to get a dozen likes from their shithead friends online.

not everyone. Only for those who chose to participate. Next time, don't be a sheep and you won't have regrets.

sure, as long as they act right. But if they start being assholes as most people do, run them off.

Please, spare me the sanctimony. These kids have had it rough; they were forced to wear masks at school, their extracurriculars were cancelled, many hadn't attended class in an actual classroom for two years.

Yes, its been awful for them, and they had no choice but to participate. It has nothing to do with "being a sheep," frick face.

My question is what do these kids, who can't go 10 minutes without some form of entertainment and also have their serotonin levels dictated by likes and notifications, look like as adults?

GFYS. Don't be some dramatic twat trying to normalize a pointless social media trend because the perpetrators "earned it" from their tragic past. What a crock.

Just call it what it is. Stupid young people being stupid. For likes.

it's scary to think about, and the honest answer is we dont' know yet. I'm in my mid-30s and I was juuuust about in that time frame wher eyou can say I "grew up with" electronics. But by that I mean we got an Apple IIE machine with floppy disks in elementary school to play learning games on. I was like 10 when we got an SNES that was played when allowed. We got a home computer when I was in middle school that didn't have internet, that came a few years later. And I didn't hav a cell phone until I was 15 and starting to drive.

When you talk about a generation that was born with a phone in their hand and they literally know nothign besdies being tethered to it 24/7, you gotta figure that would apply to kids born in what...like 2000ish? So they're currently in their early 20s and about to enter the real world. I don't think we've even gotten to the point yet to know how fricked up they're going to be when they're 40. And heaven help us when THEY start having kids.

Some real boomer energy in this post, literally every older generation whines about the younger generation again and again

And every older generation has complained about the same things; the music the kids are listening to, the way they wear their hair, the funny clothes they wear, the weird slang they have, the pop stars they idolize, etc. All pretty benign boring stuff that's as routine as the day is long.

NEver before in history has a generation been literally addicted to holding a device in their hands, craning their necks downward at it, and living on it every waking minute for hte sole purpose of trying to get another dopamine hit by getting virtual thumbs up from strangers.

Yeah, people get older and change and then act surprised that they can’t relate to the world in the same way as when they were younger, so naturally it gets conflated that the world was better when you were younger, when the actual truth is you just don’t remember the shittier parts and glorify the good parts passed an attainable level

You are told what’s right and wrong as a kid and how everything is supposed to go, then you spend the next couple decades learning most of that was complete fabrication and the others weren’t as clean as easy as they seemed as a kid. Thus the term “simpler times”

You’re pulling from the same playbook that people pulled from about radio, TV, etc when they came out.

And I’m not saying these aren’t valid concerns. But it’s also guaranteed that in not that long of time, these same kids will be complaining about the new generation not being as cool and awesome as they were when they dressed up to watch minions. It’s an inevitable cycle

I’ve seen a lot of older people buried in their phones sure more kids will be doing it but acting like this is the downfall of society is insanely hyperbolic. Also it’s a trend of teens dressing up as a character for movie. Really no different then guys getting mustaches after seeing Top Gun

as long as they keep quiet, i really dont care what they do, they can have sex with their mom, sister, or each other, and i still dont care, just dont do anything to interrupt my ability to watch and enjoy the movie i paid to see

if they enjoy doing that stuff let them as long as it doesnt disrupt the movie

it's a major part, and keep in mind we are in the infancy stage of this whole thing. Look at the absolute drooling vegetable we have as a "president" right now; only happened beacuse people didn't like the last guy's tweets. Every American right now is feeling the effects of piss poor financial markets, rampant inflation, and skyrocketing gas prices and it's 100% due to the effects of social media. We have a generation of youngsters being taught that they can pick their gender or identify as a giraffe or a chair and that it's perfectly alright. Instead of being sent for mental counseling they're praised and given hormones to change their biology, which leads to many either killing themselves or living extremely unhappily ever after as a worthless member of society. There are thousands of examples but those are some pretty important ones.

guys dressing in suits is good clean fun, I don't have the slighest problem with that. My problem was with tiktok itself and young people's unyielding desire to acceptance by way of "challenges" no matter how abusive or harmful they can be. Whether that's eating tide pods or ripping property apart that doesn't belong to them. That's an issue.

Tiktok and meme culture helps propel mediocre movie to biggest 7/4 opening in history and destroys Lightyear.

Let’s ban them.

Most parents were too weak to stand up for their kids or to let them know they did have a choice.
