I’m watching the Seinfeld episode “The Chinese Restaurant” with my daughter and she asked me “Why is the man waiting for that big phone on the wall?”

Cell phones have made the entire plot with George irrelevant. That’s somehow very fitting.

What other movie/TV scenes are now irrelevant because of modern technology?

Almost all of The Hangover. Can't remember where we were last night? Pull out your phone and check your timeline. They had cell phones in the movie, but basic flip phones.

90% of the episode concepts for Seinfeld would not exist with cellphones.

Just the ability to call, text and Uber changes everything.

the entirety of "You've Got Mail". They wouldn't be sitting around at their computers waiting for emails to come through; instead they'd likely be texting back and forth.

Also, Amazon.com would have made both of their stores fairly irrelevant, yet there is still room for both types of stores in today's marketplace.

Instead of Meg Ryan reading to kids in her store, she would have hired an NYC drag queen to do it.

It's highly unlikely that they would have communicated so much in today's world without knowing who the other person was. The ability to stalk and track people down now is incredible lol.

this is why the modern day seinfeld twitter account is absolute gold (Gold Jerry!).

quote:

George's GF wants a "no phones at dinner" rule. G: "We had a good thing going, Jerry! Now we're supposed to talk? That can only end badly!"

quote:

When George falls for a Twitter bot, Kramer claims he once Catfished himself. J:How’s that even possible? K:Oh I’m good Jerry. I’m real good

quote:

When the WiFi George usually steals suddenly has a password, he becomes addicted to trying to “hack” in. J:“Just get your own!” G:“NEVER!"

most of the time, when shows reboot or come back, I roll my eyes. If Seinfeld did it, the material they would have at their disposal is a gold mine.

Die Hard and Die Hard 2 both have their plots completely blown up by cell phones.

Although part 2 could’ve been blown up by someone driving to a pay phone down the street and calling the FAA

Phone Booth is a great movie that fits in this thread.

Everything Lucas did to the remastered Star Wars. It just takes me out of the film every time the changes show up. For instance,

I have a theory that one factor in the decline in frequency and quality of hollywood comedy movies is the invention of the smart phone. They pretty much eliminate 90% of comedy movie hijinks, and the hijinks they do create aren't nearly as funny.

this isn't really exclusive to seinfeld IMO, I think most sitcoms (and hell a good many movies) from the early 90s and before would end up quite differently if they had internet and cell phones.

Completely agree.

Misunderstandings due to bad communication or bad info has always been a cornerstone of comedy. Cell phones kill a lot of potential comedic scenarios.

Cell phones also harmed the horror/thriller genres as well.

The comic book artist John Byrne once tried to start an argument with himself on his online forum. He read a post of his at the start of a thread, didn't realize it was his post, and replied to himself with a snarky rebuttal. His fans were too polite to tell him.
