Just stumbled upon this video comparing the great films of Spike Jonze and Sofia Coppola, the couple that was previously married.

Yeah, it's widely known that Her was Spike Jonze' response to Coppola's film.
In Lost in Translation, Jonze is supposed to be the Giovanni Ribisi character (her husband) and the Anna Farris character is supposed to be Cameron Diaz.
I don't think Jonze took too kindly to how he was portrayed in that film, so he used the same damn lead actress (Johannson) to voice his love interest, whom, in the end, has no real interest in him (Phoenix).
To me, Lost in Translation is by far the superior film. I don't think I've liked anything Jones has ever done outside of his music vidoes and Jackass appearances.
His films are OVERLY melancholy and weird, to the point that you feel like everyone in them should just commit suicide and be done with it.
Her was OK, at best, but most of his other work is horrendous. Where the Wild Things are is one of the worst films I've ever seen in a a theater... Probably the worst. It destroyed a childhood classic book.
In comparison, Lost in Translation is easily on of the best films of the last 20 years. It's on screen chemistry and longing for two misfits in a foreign land who can never be together is not depressing or dower like Jonze's works. It could have taken that route, but instead its just a very authentic feeling masterpiece of storytelling about the human condition.
Its a phenomenal work of film.

Same for me too. I love the "city as a character" feel of it too.

Here’s the thing about LiT: You have to have in one way or another lived it. When I first watched it when I was like 16, I thought it was pretentious garbage. I thought the film was full of itself. Then I moved to China for a few years and a few months in I decided to give this movie another shot and realized it was an absolute masterpiece and helped me grow. I was in a great deal of isolation just hanging out with Chinese people all the time and American/European strangers I meet at bars. It’s the quintessential stranger in a strange land story.

I appreciated it a lot more the older I got and the several times I'd be in a big city by myself.
Before I would think, why are you so lonely? Youre in a big arse city with tons of shite to do. And then I'd think about how utterly isolating it is to not speak the language, not know anyone, and have all kinds of difficulty functioning. It's a scary thought in and of itself
