But to throw out the Skywalker legacy by bastardizing Luke and making Rey some random chick cheapens the story for me and makes Rey’s power AND her connection to Kylo unearned.

Correct.

I even would've been ok with her being some random no one who just has faith in the force if she got the island and Luke trained her and then she goes through a struggle to earn her knowledge and depth of force abilities.

But to have no training whatsoever and no ties to any powerful bloodline and no struggles to overcome and no practice and just be presented as the most powerful force user ever with no explanation is shite story telling.

She had no training and no genetic ties but is able to use every force ability in the book and effectively weild a lightsaber. I mean frick Anakin’s lightsaber called out to her. So can she sense lightsabers? Is the force some kind of sentient presence? Did force ghost redeemed Anakin reach out to this random chick in the universe? What was that all about?

The more you peel back the layers of the movie the worse it gets.

As I said before, it fails on the fundemental aspects of story telling. It has no foundation. There's no Skelton outline of the plot and characters. It's just a bunch of shallow and random plot service nonsense. That's why the movie is bad. That's why it doesn't work.

And on another note, someone's lightsaber is a big deal in Star wars. Vader is impressed with Luke's saber in the OT, it's reinforced in the prequels, Kylo's saber was a huge mirror of his personality. So Anakin’s original calling out to Rey had to mean something. But it didn't. At the end of the day every plot line set up in VII was just cast aside and shite on.

Another problem I have is Lukes complete knowledge of the events of his fathers fall to the dark side he presents to Rey during their fight. Neither Obi Wan or Yoda knew the complete details of his fall. Hell its a long running plot point in the EU as Luke and Leia try to find out the details about their mother. So that means Force Ghost Anakin has appeared to Luke and they’ve had long discussions about it. If that’s the case, why hasn’t he appeared to Ben to stop him from going down his path? Why didn’t he appear to Luke to stop him from trying to kill his nephew in cold blood?

Or did Rian Johnson just read the Wikipedia article on Revenge of the Sith and miss a very critical plot point?

Star Wars is the most profitable IP in history. It didn’t become that without the emotional investment by its fandom. So you don’t have to be a fanboy to make a Star Wars movie. But you do have to acknowledge what created the love for this universe and at least get basic continuity right.

It’s funny. Cause all I had from this site is how horrible of a movie it is.

All I’ve heard from every single person I know I’m person is how amazing of a movie it is.

I’m going Saturday. So i guess I’ll see first hand then.

Go in with an open mind, there are way too many dumb jokes and the movie is a bit to long and some of the scenes are overall not necessary - but for me personally I enjoyed it and it had me thinking a lot more about the movie than the franchise had recently. Not as much action as you would expect and more "philosophical" approach.

Nah.

Phantom Menace is the worst, period.

TLJ, while bad is still less of a wreck than all the prequels. Revenge of the Sith gets a lot of credit for not being as bad as the other two but it, by itself, is still a complete mess in terms of story telling, character motivation, and connectivity.

Darth Maul, Qui Gonn, and Duel of the Fates makes that movie better than AotC.

Plus 11 year old Breesus loved the frick out of it. I saw it three times in theaters. I had the posters on my wall. I got my parents to buy it the day it came out and wore my copy down.

I said that when all the OT fans were crapping on the Prequals. Kids loved the prequals, they were very cool and in retrospect, not as bad as people made out.

My 13 year old just watched TLJ and was literally pissed and upset about how they treated Luke. He told me that he thought Luke was a hero, why was he so mean and mad. Why would they kill Luke like that? Out of the mouth of babes...

One cool fight scene doesn't make up for the fact the film has no protagonist, the villan is literally a cardboard cutout with absolutely no characterization, and the entire story of the film is essentially worthless to the overall saga.

Phantom Menace is a complete disaster in terms of story-telling

It's really fricking creepy Disney is keeping an actress alive in the series who died 2 years ago to be in yet another film in later on but killed the other actors who are still alive.

They could have had her go out in a beautiful death but instead they blew hay into sister and had her do her Mary Poppins routine instead.

Who signed off on that??

Who knows how they handle it. But she wasn't killed off in 8 because 8 was done filming when she died.

ETA:

If Disney hired me to write IX, the first line of the crawl would be "LEIA ORGANA HAS DIED."

The movie is indeed polarizing

It has problems. I liked it, however I can see people not and not because they are extreme right wingers who hate diversity. Those people are out there but this film is not perfect. IMO it is not on the level of the prequels. I enjoyed it much more the second time around.

I do know in 3 years, one side will merge into the other. Either people will realize there were over reactions on how bad it was, or it will be viewed as complete garbage like the prequels.

Star wars lost its focus after return of the Jedi.

I wish I could make everything produced after that disappear.
