He was witty after being captured. And he was good at it. Should've been the new Han.

how did he not recognize her or not remember one slipped through?
Maybe he intentionally let her slip through since she was his cousin. I think Kylo knows exactly who she is, especially since he flips when the captain makes note of the fact that a girl from Jakku is with Finn and BB-8.

Got to give you credit GT. We may disagree but at least you're putting out there what you would have rather seen.

He does. The film implies it, and the novelization confirms it.

r she's just super powerful with the Force.
That's because she's Lukes daughter. Remember Luke held his own with a few weeks training with Yoda against Vader.
She's an epic pilot. She's an epic mechanic. All traits of her father and grandfather.

I can see how that would be innate instinct of someone not to butcher clear innocents.
that's where racism comes in
i think a big issue is that he kind of has the "shell shock" pattern after seeing one of his friends die. that makes his resistance to the meme of a weak warrior, similar to that spineless pussy from SPR
the problem is that STARTING his character off this way was just bad

Either she wasn't at the island when Kylo went on his killing spree, or he decided to spare her.
Are we for sure that the attack we see in her visions is led by Kylo? I'm assuming it's him because he's using the same lightsaber style as Kylo. Kylo and Rey appear to be close in age, but in her vision "Kylo" looks fully grown, while she is left on Jakku as a young child.
What I'm getting at is, is it possible that the Knights of Ren attacked Luke's academy, kidnap Kylo and kill the rest? Luke somehow escapes with Rey and drops her off on Jakku to keep her safe?

I didn't say it made him a pussy. I said he came off as one. Like I said. The character would have been better served with a veteran trooper turning his back on the Order after years of faithful service and having seen enough of it.

One of the themes was that Rey was a lot of untrained ability in the Force. Ren being able to read those thoughts in her subconscious makes sense.
that's how i took it
when she touched the lightsaber, the force kind of just took over for the first time (well 2nd after her "i've never flown like that!" line) and it scared her

Rey is about 20, and Kylo is almost 30.
This means that Kylo was around 15 when he went on his rampage, which is certainly plausible.

Yeah, what I'm thinking right now is that after butchering Luke's pupils, Kylo may have abducted Rey. He's the one who originally dropped her off on Jakku when he decided he didn't have it in him to take a 5 year old before Snoke. He may have had a soft spot for her being her big cousin. It may be the major reason why during the film Kylo says he's wrestling between the dark and the light.

He knew who she was, but didn't know she was as strong with the Force as she turned out to be. It's probably been about 15 years since he's seen her.
His exact line to Snoke - "She's strong in the force. Untrained, but stronger than she knows."

where would he develop this morality? how would he have any sort of a moral compass or understand what "good" even is?
you have to think of him like an unsullied from GOT. he knows nothing other than service, and that service is as a solider
I think that's a ridiculous assumption. I can tell when people talk about the military, but have never actually been in the military.

Well, he's now pretty damn accountable for his actions in actively ordering his troops to leave without BB-8. He had little choice but to say it this way. Maybe he just thought he could get into his cousin's mind like he could years back, but she's caught on far more quickly than he ever thought.

I disagree.
I kind of thought it was novel to have a character like this because that's how most people would react to the situations in these movies.
"Oh, you want me to join you in fighting the greatest military power in the galaxy with less weaponry and little to no training? No thanks, I'll just run and hide and live."

oh i can tell you the most interesting plot i thought of
you have the republic establishing order but the roles are reversed and the loyalists want a return to imperial rule. a couple of factions acting just as the rebels did against the empire
over the course of the first movie you're introduced to what essentially is a cult of vader who eventually discovers the dark side. we get to see the devolution into the dark side as well. over the course of the first film you see this powerful order take over one of hte imperial forces to emerge as the force
this sets up the rise of that group and decisive victory against the republic (this episode 4 in reverse) in film 2 only for the good guys to win in the 3rd when luke finally trains, essentially, the next luke (over the course of the films we'd have to establish this. rey would work. the star wars universe is one of the few where powerful women make sense b/c it's the force and not our physical bodies)

quote:Because it would've made for a better character. Personally I would have made him an ace TIE fighter pilot with dozens of X-Wing kills to his credit who was ordered to bomb the village and then refused. Then I would have changed the Poe character from badass pilot to undercover spy looking for the map who was captured and Finn, having had enough of the order, rescues Poe and flies away from the Starkiller Base to the resistance. Then HE takes on the Han role. Helping the resistance when he can but deep down wanting nothing to do with the First Order. Just wanting to get away. In this scenario I would have made Poe a chick so there could be some sexual tension between the two and Rey could have been a male. You know, like a Knight. Stoic and celibate and completely committed to the force without the outside distraction of a love interest.
Why would that be better?
That's how I would have written the movie

Because that is boring and doesn't leave much room for growth or depth. Just a dumb kid who saw his buddy killed and didn't want to shoot women and children. Just kind of mhh to me.

no
but they won't not kill some people b/c they randomly decide "it's not the right thing to do"
humans are very malleable and morality is a function of our development. history has shown that it's very easy to have moral people devolve into immorality. WWII was only 60 years ago and plenty of normal germans did horrible things. go watch the act of killing
it's more than just creating badasses, too. you dehumanize all opponents. it's very easy to kill when they don't seem human
