Rey is amazing. YWHI.

Rey/Ren/Fin were all pretty good characters. The movie was pretty good, but it laid it on *thick* with the nostalgia factor (too thick). Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, et al really are just not good actors anymore.
This movie would have been *really* good if they would have just talked about the older characters, not had them act in it.

Even a 7 and 9 year old can see how simple and boring Rey and Finn were.
A 9 year old me thought the Phantom Menace was the best of the Star Wars movies. Kids aren't the best at evaluating what a good character is. Kids like outrageous and fun characters. Rey is a subtle character. Sorry if they have to talk a ton in order for you to find them likable.

Here's a question: who here thinks that they couldn't come up with an equally compelling, if not even better script than this?
This is almost exactly what I've had in mind for years, so no I couldn't come up with something better than this, at least as the opening act. Got some things in mind for Episodes VIII and IX, but they may go with what I have in mind again.

No. No they weren't people were upset coming out of the first showing.

Rey won't stand the test of time. People wont remember who she is in 10 years

People remember kid Anakin. Rey will certainly be remembered and be used as a template when it comes to writing female heroes, along the lines of Sarah Conner and Ellen Ripley. I really think she's in this Top 3 category.

You thought Interstellar was going to reawaken America's interest in the space program

Asking this because I know I'll get some off the wall theory about it, but if Rey is Luke's daughter, and she's from a desert planet where everyone is an alien....why does she have a British accent then? Especially if the "she was trained and then her memory was erased" theory was correct
It's not really important, just thought of it a second ago

There have been a shite ton of movies about it recently in the theater and tons of space news in the past 2 years with Pluto and liquid water on Mars, so I haven't lost hope. I do think the average American is becoming more interested in the space program, although it's not proceeding as quickly as I've hoped.

Know I'll get hate for this but watching the originals and then Episode VII, it makes the originals look so dated and kinda boing. Like the stormtroopers actually felt kinda dangerous, Ren wasn't as boring as Darth Vader, and him taking the mask off propelled his character.
I've never been a Star Wars fan of any sorts, but I loved The Force Awakens. I thought the character development was great and I loved Rey/Fin/Ren

Anyone think we might see Obi Wan, Yoda or Anakin show up as a force ghost to Luke in Episode VIII? I think that would be pretty cool.

I can agree to some extent. This is an updated version of a New Hope, but unlike some people, I see that as a positive and in its favor. The original has aged a bit, and it's still quite good, but it's not nearly as good as Empire. Empire hasn't aged a day and there's a reason it's the only movie Lucas hasn't managed to frick up, and that's because there are no real flaws in it.

hey never had problems going where-ever they needed to go, do you not understand how hyperspace works?
Without precise calculations you can fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova. In TFA, they launch out of a hanger and land right on a planet's surface. If they were using a different ship, then you could make the arguement that technology improved, but they weren't and I thought it actually wasted opportunities for tension that ANH and ESB did so well.

The ship is built to withstand damage, what is so wrong with that?
The millennium falcon was a piece of junk when Han was young and it doesn't seem to have been taken care of in the meantime. I could be picking nits, but it reminded me of what they did with C3-PO and R2-D2 in the prequels. Remember the scene where C3-PO fell in attack of the clones and was holding on by his fingertips? It's ridiculous if you have seen C3-PO in other movies. He fell over and lost an arm when he got startled by sand people.

John Williams doesn't make bad music
It was poor for his standards, but he is 83 years old.

Kylo has training and can use the force well the problem is that he doesn't know how to control his emotions. Rey was able to overcome her fear, which gave her the advantage in the fight, being aggressive in a fight many times isn't a good thing.
Anakin couldn't control his emotions either, it doesn't necessarily make you a bad fighter, it makes you succumb to the dark side. My issue is that I think Kylo is going to be built up to be the villain (and I thought he was one of the best characters in the movie), but he's already lost to someone with no training. Where is his character going to go from here?

It would have been insulting to John Williams, but they should have gone with his modern day equivalent in Michael Giacchino. He would have blown it out of the water.

I'm not going to debate people's opinions. I get we don't all see the same thing in movies.
I did laugh at parts, but I really liked the movie, the 7 and 9 year old loved the movie and were so attentive every time Rey was on screen. I like that it's cool for girls to be into Star Wars now. That is all that matters to me, I don't have that same feeling I did after Phantom. I will say I didn't hate Phantom at first but I didn't like half the story. I was so hungry for anything Star Wars, I've seen the last four movies the first Friday they were out. I think I enjoyed it better than ROTJ. I get it had a lot of similarities with New Hope, but it was far from a reboot.
