No preaching, no Rose, and Luke is still around.

Rey is fighting tie fighters on foot with a lightsaber and Palpatine has been hanging out in the ruins of the death star for 30 years.

But atleast an old fat Lando got dragged out of retirement to beg the fans to show up.

Unfulfilled Redemption?

That's what Luke is now? A shitty side character/generational meaningless place holder who has accomplished nothing?

Talk about shitting on an all time great character.

Return of the Jedi is about Anakin, not Luke.

ETA: Since some people fail to realize context, the title "Return of the Jedi" is about Anakin. Luke is the protagonist of the OT, no one is arguing that.

A few clips from the episode about the "world between worlds". If they bring Paps back this is how they'll justify it IMO.

TFA novelization and Aftermath: Empire's End. It's the Journal of the Whills, the prophecy.

If we somehow get Jedi Master Luke vs Emperor Palpatine after the abomination that was VIII, give Abrams a lifetime achievement oscar.

If they retcon 8 out of existence, bring Luke back, and then revive Palpatine, and have them fight that's an awful lot to cram into a movie.

So Snoke either is Palpatine or was his apprentice?

Go frick yourself. Return of the Jedi is every bit as much about Luke as it is about Vader.

You're going to seriously try to retcon the importance of Luke out of Star Wars?

But as of the end of 8, there are no Jedi to train her. Luke certainly couldn't be bothered with it while he was alive.

ok, I've watched this trailer 3 times, once with my son. Looking for hints and teasers.

I think it's increasingly clear they are retconning Ep 8 out of existence , or at least altering the reality of it.

Things I caught- First off, the title- The Rise of Skywalker. Odd choice if Luke's really gone, no?
*But then, I will point out that Luke's final scene in TLJ had some questions posed... there's one shot where he's not looking over a blue ocean with a single sun in the sky; one looks like he's facing a binary sun.

That's Tattioone.
What, again, was Rey's task? Find Luke Skywalker.

Where are they in this trailer... a desert planet. Is it Rey's planet, or Tattooine? Would be weird for her to take everyone back home, but Disney's weird so we can't discount that. However, in the trailer, at about 1:30 or so, there's a scene with Poe, Finn, and C3PO riding what looks to be a skiff (just like the one in Return of the Jedi, used to escape the Sarlacc's pit), being pursued by speederbikes (like the ones on Endor).
It could just be any skiff on any desert planet, but Luke HAD that skiff when he rescued everyone from Jabba, and C3PO would know where he left it, if they ditched prior to leaving. BTW, so would Chewie and Lando, and they're shown piloting the Falcon out of hyperspace.

So, you go to Tattooine to Luke's last known whereabouts on that planet, and start exploring for signs of more recent usage.
The map was a ruse and a dead end, they find Lando for more help exploring Tatooine because he was incognito at Jabba's palace awhile; he'd actually know the lay of the land.

I think they ultimately find Luke living in Ben's old crib, but first we're going back to Jabba's palace and try to trace Luke from there (it makes sense that in ROTJ, he didn't land in Mos Eisley because it was under Imperial control). He doesn't land near Jabba because that would have been too obvious; so maybe he lands at Ben's, and travels over land to Jabba.

Which brings up this question- Why did Luke lead her on a wild goose chase to Achtoo, and why the ruse?
Per the narration of the trailer:we've passed on all we know. a thousand generations live in you now. but this is YOUR fight

She needed to learn. And simply finding a map wasn't the key, it's more complicated then that. She has to persevere and overcome doubt. And Luke's not going to fight her battles, she has to do that herself.

It's not as if Palpatine is beyond using lesser beings to justify he's ultimate goals. He did it with Maul and Dooku and was attempting to the same to Anakin with Luke.

Calm down... the title "Return of the Jedi" is 100% about Anakin. Luke is my favorite character in all of cinematic history. He very much played a huge role in the redemption of Anakin and in the lore as a whole.

And he'll have a further role in IX. The way VIII treated him was a total abomination to the character.

Yeah, I have no idea how anybody can look at ROTJ and not see it as Luke's journey.

And remember, Anakin as "chosen one" is a product of the prequels. In the original trilogy, he was just a very powerful Jedi that turned into an a-hole so the OT was centered as Luke's journey and just got retconned into being (also) the culmination of Anakin's.

Yeah he's not going to fight her battles. I mean he might try to slaughter his nephew in his sleep because he had a bad dream, but he has no plans to try to fix any of that or help in anyway. This is Rey's fight. A random person he never met and didn't know until he comically threw his father's laser sword over his head and then told her to go frick herself.

Yeah no shite.

If there's one thing Abrams knows, it's fan service

That trailer had Luke, Palpatine, Chewey, Lando, the Falcon, a desert planet, and the Death Star

That's a desperate ploy to give the film a chance.

How is the movie going to start?

Luke wakes up from a bad dream on Tatooine at his old farm and summons Rey to himself? They retcon all of 8 out of existence in the first 10 minutes.

The next scene is Kylo showing up to finish his training to what he thinks is Snoke's base, but he walks into a dark room and the reveal is a severely disfigured Palpatine, who has been biding his time, and snoke kneeling at his side .

And so the movie is Luke training Rey and Palpatine training Kylo and the end is a fight between the four of them?

Or maybe Luke and Snoke fight and Luke kills Snoke but is mortally wounded in the process. Dieing, Kylo returns to the light and joins with Rey. They join together to fight Palpatine.

Further 'proof'(?) of Tattooine and the search for Luke...

Look at the trailer, 1:28 or so. During the chase on the skiff.

Are those vaporaters, like the one Luke went to fix in the original SW? The Lars were moisture farmers, they'd have plots like that.
Is that the canyon Luke ran into the Sandpeople, meaning they are close to Ben's place?

Didn't catch that the first viewing but yeah I think so. I'm guessing that's the DS2 and not the original right? Also don't really look like Endor either but something that large falling down would change the landscape for sure. I just wonder how the New Republic didn't drag all the debris out? Surely it would be still sitting there after nearly 30 years right?
