Star Wars Books

So my 14 year old son is an avid reader and loves Star Wars. I was wanting to get him a Star Wars book or books for Christmas. I know there are a lot out there but which ones are the best? He’s kinda like us, likes the old stuff and the cartoons. Crazy about the Mandalorian.

Would he care about what is cannon and what is not? Some of the legends novels are excllent, and the best Disney cannon novels can't compare to them.

He would probably be more interested in them being good books than being canon.

The Chuck Wendig Aftermath trilogy is pretty good. It occurs between Jedi and Awakens.
The last book somewhat sets up the First Order, the wayfinders, and Palp's quest for immortality.
Wedge, Leia, Han, and Chewie make small appearances, but for the most part it is all new characters and folks not seen on screen.
There isn't anything that's not kid appropriate, but a couple of the characters are of the lgbtq persuasion.

If you’re ok with “non-canon,” the best are probably the OG Grand Admiral Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Great books overall and set the stage for the entire pre-Disney book canon.
The Rogue Squadron series is also really good and explores more of the non-Jedi, non-major movie character side of Star Wars.
Finally it all culminates in the Yuzzhan Vong(spelling) saga, which is a great epic. But there’s like 20 books and it helps to have background in the other pre-Disney canon before jumping into it.
Also frick Disney for destroying great book canon with Rey centric garbage.

This is the best of all the SW books. Even though Disney scrapped all the pre acquisition books from canon, they have incorporated this Trawn trilogy into their own canon since it was so damn badass. Plus it appears they are heading towards some actual iteration of this story with future tv series or movies.
It's a must read for any SW fan

I agree with everyone saying Thrawn trilogy.
Get him Heir to the Empire and tell him this was suppose to be the sequels

Supposed to be? In my mind they ARE the sequels

Lost Stars is very good, a newer canon novel classified as “young adult” but nevertheless I enjoyed it very much so.
ETA I only referred to it as canon because there are some of the OT referenced on the periphery to the overall plot that he’d recognize. Not trying to sound elitist or anything.

Ignore all of this OP. The best novels were written before the Disney takeover.

+1
Also Zahn has already written one canon trilogy on Thrawn's rise in the Empire (pre Rebels). A new Thrawn book/trilogy just came out in Sept which is about Thrawn's past with the Chiss.

This.
I'm pretty sure the Dark Nest series came after too, but as someone who skipped alot of high school to read it in the parking lot at Books a Million, the Yuuzhan Vong was epic. And even reaches back to prequels era with Vergere. Definitely have to read at least Thrawn, New Jedi Order (to set up the Hapans and Tenel-Ka), maybe even some Rogue Squadron for Corran Horn.
So many good series in the EU. frick you KK

Get him Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Thawn trilogy. The first book is Heir to the Empire. The Darth Bane trilogy, and Darth Plaegius were also awesome.
Of the modern canon books Aftermath is good, and so are the new Thrawn books by Zahn.

It looks like there was a Thrawn series in the 80’s and a recent Thrawn series. Which are you steering me towards? Also, Thrawn Treason is at Target. Is that a stand alone book?

The original series is better. Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command. This series is a sequel to Return of the Jedi. It is not part of the Disney cannon.
The newer series is good too. They take place before the Battle of Yavin in A New Hope. These books reintroduce Thrawn into the new cannon. Treason is the third book in this new series.
Both are by Timothy Zahn.

Zahn’s new Thrawn trilogy if he’s into Mando and Rebels. The books are great and really flesh out the character which is one of the best in Star Wars. The Wendig stuff isn’t very good. Tarkin by Luceno is really good as well.
ETA: Catalyst is really good if he likes Rogue One. Heir to the Jedi is a good Luke story.

I have fond memories of The Jedi Academy Trilogy
The books are Jedi Search, Dark Apprentice, and Champions of the Force.
LINK. You can dig deeper from there to see if they might interest the recipient.
