I never considered seeing it. I'm curious as to why you did, after hating the first one.

I wasn't going to, but my wife wanted to see it. I went in with awful expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

I thought ST09 was a jumbled mess. The time travel/alternate reality created more inconsistencies than it prevented. I never felt the actors were actually portraying the characters they were supposed to. It just didn't work for me.

Into Darkness was much better on all fronts. The actors/writers did a better job of capturing the characters. Visually, it was beautiful. The uniforms and sets are amazing (although I don't care for the new Enterprise design). And I think it captured a bit of the spirit and charm of TOS, something ST09 never did, IMO.

Now don't get me wrong, ID is a flawed film. There are many things I would have changed. But it was good enough to be ranked in the middle of the pack of the Star Trek movies, far ahead of the 2009 movie. In my opinion, of course.

Also would you contend that Nsync, by virtue of having sold more albums, are better musicians than Jimi Hendrix?

TOS was an action adventure TV series.

action was not the focal point of TOS the way it is the new movies.

no I would contend that Nsync by virtue of having sold more albums, are more popular musicians then Jimi Hendrix and that the record labels understood what the music going public wanted and gave them the music they would pay lots of their dollars for, much like JJ Abrams.

please...action was what TOS was about. They occasionally managed to wrap it in a story that took up an issue.

agree.

Even after coming out of the movie the first time I saw it...Wrath of Khan was still the best in my mind.

if the only thing you care about is the money aspect of it that's fine i guess but i don't really care at all about that stuff nor do people who are big time Star Trek fans (the people this thread are about).

I am a big time star trek fan.

Easily the biggest of everyone I know.

I have watched every episode of every star trek (including that trash voyager).

SO when I say that they made this for star trek fans you can be assured they did. The problem with all those convention geeks (which I am one) is they are the minority of movie goers in the world now. If we are only making movies for them then the studio isn't going to make money which means no other movies get made.

Most of the people, like Ace, who are bitching are just trolling without ever actually sitting back and just enjoying the story. There loss really.

Original Series...no I'm not. I can't tell you how many times Kirk was punching someone. Major action series.

TNG yeah, since they never left the bridge. Barely any action.

Maybe for the time - but it was very balanced. There was little balance or even thought to ST09 - just mindless, thoughtless action - oh, and character twists so they would be relatively unrecognizable except by name and uniform.

Punching someone is one thing, long drawn out Star Warsesque action sequences are something else.

Should we have spent 2 hours discussing Klingon-Romulan relations like they do in TNG?

I love TOS, but it was action formula to the max...the new movies are on par with it with better special effects. The first one had less of a story (less interesting to be sure) but they followed in the footsteps of TOS nicely.
