So if, IF, Tony got whacked, was the purpose of Meadow's parking scene to suggest that she was the only one in the family who didn't have to see his brains splattering through the air?

It’s not the same feeling in rewatches, but when it originally aired it was a very tense scene and nobody knew what would happen. Focusing on her struggle parking just added to the tension. At least that how I felt watching back in 2007.

We felt more irritation at it, like “why is this happening?” against the backdrop of pretty harmless circumstances. We were completely blindsided by all of it.

Bumping because I was reading about Hal Holbrook (R.I.P.) and found this great scene. Aside from Holbrook's excellent performance, it reminded me of some discussions we've had in the past about whether or not Paulie turned on Tony when he disappeared:

I love the ending. Many don't though. I personally feel that Butchie double crossed him and he died but I also like to make myself think sometimes that it was just a glimpse into his story and that they are still living. Thats the point though, at the time the ending, and show itself, was revolutionary in many ways. Hence we are still talking about it.

He's dead. Butch had him killed.

Technically Meadow would be walking in just in time to see it, hence the final bell ring after it shows her approaching the door. But I agree, if you watch Butch's character, you can tell by his body language and stuff he says that someone is going to die. Like when Doc eats off of Phil's plate and you can see Butch look up and eye the situation. Also when they are at the sit-down and they ask them for Phil's location and Butch cuts his eyes at his partner and says "I can't go there, but you do what you gotta do" which is right after Phil hangs up on him on the phone. Not to mention he explicitly tells Phil earlier that you wipe out the top few guys and do business with whoever is left. They set his character up perfectly for the theory that he ordered a hit on him, imo. Also, the guy who comes in the diner looks a lot like the zips that Tony and them have brought over from Italy to take out people for them, also king of implying that whoever ordered it wanted to isolate themselves from it.

Also, in the end of The Natural, Roy Hobbs is in Heaven. Somehow even Ebert missed this.

Every time the bell rang Tony would look up and the camera would switch to his view of the door. The screen going black was Tony's point of view.

I really think it's as simple as this. People try to inject different scenarios and interpretations into the ending because we all want to keep the show alive but the screen going black was simply Tony's POV, nothing else

Just like Coach Molinaro said, Tony wasn't prepared.

We debate left and right if tony was dead at the end but does Sil and Bobby get shot if Chris was alive.

Chris was Tony’s go to for every big hit in the past. He would have known Phil doesn’t speak Ukrainian and everyone would have went underground right away.

Chris was Tony’s biggest mistake both in life and death. He shouldn’t have fast tracked a junkie but that junkie was his best soldier

I mean, what other ending to the show could there be? A stupid final episode that tells nothing but an awkward family dinner?

Given their family life over the course of the series, that wouldn’t have been entirely inappropriate.
