So it appears The Last Jedi is the LEAST essential of all 8 films (spoilers)

As it turns out, although “The Last Jedi” meets a relatively high standard for franchise filmmaking, Johnson’s effort is ultimately a disappointment.

Despite the success of “The Last Jedi” at supplying jaw-dropping visuals and a hall-of-fame-worthy lightsaber battle, audiences could presumably skip this film and show up for Episode IX without experiencing the slightest confusion as to what happened in the interim. It’s as if Johnson’s assignment was to extend the franchise without changing anything fundamental

Yeah, because this thread was necessary and you weren't trying to troll.

Yep one review out of hundreds so far is the final verdict of the film

It's not that. It's that he went out of his way to emphasize a negative review when there have been so few and then made it its own thread when there's already a thousand Star Wars threads already.

I mean the author included enough spoilers to back up his assertion

What stood out most to me (and it appears to be backed up by many positive reviews) is this is a SW film designed to highlight females kicking arse, but doesn't move the plot any further along

Just 2+ hours of awesome war footage. Therefore the comparison to Dunkirk

Well, that's, like, his opinion man.

Plenty of others disagree. Not saying he's wrong, but that's kind of the opposite of what I'm hearing. I'm hearing too long but nothing about how it doesn't take risks and doesn't move the plot forward.

In fact, here's a blurb from a guy who liked the movie, didn't love it, and even he admits the film isn't safe and moves the story forward

quote:

Johnson, however, doesn’t play things as safe as Abrams and some of his story points are unexpected. In fact, he not only advances the overall narrative but brings it almost to a conclusion. There seems to be very little left for Episode IX to accomplish

I feel like the general movie going audience is going to love The Last Jedi, but the Star Wars fan is going to take issue with some of the creative liberties taken with established lore and the direction of some of the characters.
