The Hobbit was written as a childrens book, while TLotR was written to be the masterpiece it is.
Obviously the movie interpretations should and do reflect that fact.

Are you saying The Hobbit movies are for children?
Posted on 7/28/14 at 4:48 pm to abellsujr
Its certainly much more light-hearted than Lord of the Rings

I agree, but I don't think they're specifically for children. The book may have been written for children, but it holds up with young adults.

I'm saying the book it was based on was written for children, because it was.
Walsh and Boyens take a good bit of liberty with the screenplays for both The Hobbit and LotR, but the basic differences in the level of the books can be seen in the movie adaptations.
The goofyness of the 3 trolls, the cartoonish nature of the Goblin Kings lair, it all fits. The screenplay still offers much more character depth than the book does, for the most part. Unless you'rea purist who insists on exact accuracy with no deviations, there's nothing wrong with it in the least.

The fact that the actual battle of the 5 armies is probably going to rival any of the battles in the LOTR 2 & 3 is enough for me to watch it. It should be an epic battle.

This trailer gave me goosebumps.
Can't wait to see sauron or the necromancer

The whole plot and character change thing infuriates me, but I'll still run screaming to this movie like a little sissy girl.

To love the Hobbit and LOTR movies, I believe one must either have magic naturally in their soul, or have read these great novels and had magic instilled as a result. To love these two movie trilogies, therefore, does not require a slavish verbatim re-telling of every single feature, but a story-teller's interpretation. This, IMO, is what Jackson has done/is doing. With the possible exception of the absence of Tom Bombadil in LOTR, I'd say the essence of the trilogy was achieved. As, for the most part, is true also in the Hobbit.
Clearly there are some who have posted their reservations about the films, for this or that reason. Fine, this is America and all that.
But I can only say I am sad for them - their imaginations' horizons appear so limited and boxy.

Apparently Digital Domain developed a new cgi engine for the express purpose of having 1000's of individual (humanoids) on film at the same time, because there wasn't anything that would do it at the time LoTR was filmed. No doubt they want to get some more use out of that investment, so I don't think you will be disappointed.

you mean like the addition of Radagast, Saruman and Galadriel and the back story of the investigation of Dol Guldur and 'tombs of the High Fells'?
While not actually being part of "The Hobbit" book, it actually fits the world of M.E. perfectly, I can see why it would bother purists, but to me it works and makes the movie version of The Hobbit a good bit more interesting than the relatively simple plot line of the book. I have to admit I love it.
If you mean the addition of Tauriel? Well she's added mostly because there are no prevalent female characters in the book, and we know how feminists whine and moan if they are made to feel left out. To me she's nice eye candy, so no complaints!

I've read the book and a fan of the LotR films, but I only saw a few minutes of the first Hobbit and it was enough for me.

Man I'm really excited for this. That trailer was phenomenal. Having Pippin's song as the voice over made it more epic. I know this trilogy gets a lot of hate for being cartoonish, but after the first movie the tone changed (exception being the Barrel chase, which I thought was fun). After the escape from the elves in the book, the tone changes as well. This will be a very good transition into the LOTR trilogy. I can't wait.
Really loved that they added things from the appendices. In the book Gandalf just leaves and you never really hear anything from him until the BoFA.

The charge of the Rohirrim (sp?) to Gondor is only one of a few times I have ever gotten Chills watching a film.

I'm sure Jackson will make it bigger. It's been over 10 years since RotK. The CGI in that battle will be epic.
